Can't retrieve my data - volumne scan fails, disk scans OK
« on: March 08, 2010, 02:55:25 PM »

DNS 321, firmware 1.03, two hard drives, both Seagates ST3500320NS.

NAS has been operating without any problems for a few months. Primarily used for transfer of  large database (copy from local machine to NAS, copied back down by other machine), and also shared small database. Was working fine in the morning, but couldn't log into the database mid-operation later that day.

When in Windows, go into folder that database is in, Windows reports no files in that folder. However, if we try to copy files into the directory, it says that the existing files can't be overwritten.

With the existing DNS, I did Tools, Disk Diagnostics. The hard drives pass the full scan, but the volumn scan fails.

Currently, I've borrowed another DNS 321 to see if the problems are with the DNS or with the hard drives. At the moment, I've got one HD in one DNS and one HD in the other one.

In *both* of them, it reports that each HD is OK but each volume isn't. I refused to believe both hard drives, and/or both DNS units are faulty - what else could I try?

Thanks,

Sarah

If they were in RAID-1 and somehow the contents got corrupted, both disks could have the same structural issues with the filesystem.

They were indeed in RAID 1.

Hmmm.

Sarah,
If you have a Linux based machine you can pull either hard drive and hook it up, then read the data.  If the files are still corrupt then try the other drive.  And if the files are still corrupt I don't know what to say.

If you do not have a Linux computer, grab Knopix bootable CD (Google it).  You will be able to boot to Linux with this CD.  The volume will be mounted as read only if I recall correctly.  If your data is intact, maybe you could offload it to a USB Key or other network drive.

Also, it this an EXT2 or EXT3 volume?  I suspect EXT2 since you have volume corruption.  Knopix will use both of course.
