iPhoto Library copy to 1.03 DNS-343 fails
« on: March 11, 2010, 04:07:31 PM »

Greetings All;

I've had my 343 for about a week and some features work great.  It's quite fast and my PC's are working solid with it.  But I have a big problem with my Macs.  Every time I try to copy an iPhoto library to the unit it hangs at about 195Mb and Finder spits back the following error message:

The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written.
(Error code -36)

I've tried copying iPhoto libraries from two different Macs and get the same result.  I can copy the very same files to the HP MV 2020 that the DLink is replacing.

Another effect of the problem is that I cannot delete the partial file that the Mac creates.  When I try Finder tells me that the file is in use.  I've rebooted the DLink to no avail.  I have to rebuild the volume to get rid of it.

Worth noting that the original FW was 1.02 and the entire box would freeze up using that version.

Since the iPhoto library is a package file I suspect that is the root issue.  This is obviously some file system issue so I need help from DLink to get a fix.  The tech who took my trouble ticket said to post this here to see if anyone else has the same issue.

I was reading some posts for the 323 and it looks like there are add ons for AFP and Bonjour.  I'd love to add those in if it's possible - I suspect that would solve the problem.  I haven't found posts on how to do add ons for the 343 yet.  If nothing else I would be happy to try beta fw - I'm not relying on the unit until I get all this ironed out so I can rebuild the volume if necessary.

Drives I have installed are;
1 - Hitachi HDT725050VLA360
2 - Hitachi HDT725050VLA360
3 - Seagate ST3500641AS

Thanks in advance...Sam

Hi Sam,

I have a DNS-323 and two DNS-343's setup with ffp installed (see http://wiki.dns323.info/howto:ffp) so that I can run Avahi and AFP.  By connecting to the DNS's using AFP (not SMB), I am able to manage a 115 MB iPhoto Library* over a 1 GBit Ethernet Switch.  I did try a 100 MBit ethernet switch, but it is a bit too slow to manage an iPhoto library.

Give this a try and let me know if you have any follow up questions.

Cheers!

* My largest iPhoto library is 115 MB.  I actually have many iPhoto libraries that I manage in order to keep the size of each individual libraries down.  All-in-all, I have around 400 MB total in my multiple iPhoto libraries.  If you don't have it already, I would suggest investing in the iPhoto Library Manager (http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/) -- this is a 3rd party application.  This really handy tool allows one to quickly switch between libraries as well as build new libraries.  In fact, if your current library just won't copy over to the DNS, you may want to consider splitting it into multiple libraries using the iPhoto Library Manager.

Thanks for the post thebeck.

I went to the link and placed the script and tarball on Volume_1 and nothing happened when I rebooted.  I found another source for the files and re-downloaded them just in case and still no dice.  No log created to look at.  Did you have to do anything differently for the 343 vs the 323?  What FW are you running on your 343s?

Thanks..Sam

thebeck is theman!

I got afs and bonjour all setup with fun plug.  Works great and the response on the Mac seems much faster.   No more issues with the iPhoto library.

Thanks a ton!
