Where's the next firmware release
« on: March 13, 2010, 05:40:33 AM »

I've been gone from this forum for a few months and decided to visit it again to see how things are going.  It appears nothing is different since I left, GRJ is still helping everyone out and looks like the same questions/problems keep popping up.  My NAS has been running great with firmware 1.03 but thought I'd look for the next version to see what new features or bug fixes were included but to my suprise there is no next firmware release.

Oh well, guess I'll check back again later.

GRJ, I leave the forum to you my good man.

-Joe

P.S.  That hardware mod I made for auto-power-on, she works like a champ.  It was actually tested during a long power outage where the UPS died.  When power was restored, the NAS powered up as well.

heh, I'm not holding my breath on this one.  Got a dollar that says this product is about as developed as it is going to get.

Well I would suspect there will be at least one more -- I got an email back from tech support regarding some questions I had on the new 4k drives the answer I got was as that was the way drives were moving there would likely be a firmware update to support the properly -- obviously they couldn't give any time lines but it seems they will continue to support it at least.

The trick is to get the UPS to turn itself on automatically, only one of mine does that after a full run-down.

Since D-Link is still selling these, they're probably doing some development.  I don't foresee major functionality changes, but who knows. :)

I have 3 APC units and 2 of them do turn on after an extended outage, oddly enough the 2 cheaper units. But neither my 321 or 323 come back automagically after they go down.  :(  I know that the 321 never will, after that long discussion about H/W revisions awhile back, but I had high hopes for my new 323 that I bought just 2 months ago. I really need this function for when I am away on extended leave from home, but sadly there is no love on that issue with the 323 either.  :'(

P.S. Nice to see ya back again Joe, if only for a short visit. Same with me, I've been down hard for several months now, but GRJ is still holding down the fort in his usual "cheerful style"!  ;)  ;)  ;D  Way to go GRJ, has Dlink sent ya yer first paycheque yet?  ROFL!!! And ditto for fordem, can't overlook you too for your contributions to this site!  No offense to ECF and D-L M though, you guys do a great job too, considering that this isn't the only thing you are employed at D-Link for!  :D  :D  :D  Maybe D-Link should look into starting a Hall of Fame/Shame for it's more helpful members, and/or more useless members too. All to be voted in by other members and D-Link mods of course. Hmmm...on second thought, maybe just by the mods or there could be way too much fur flying if we let the members into that kind of voting! LOL!

I'm not holding my breath for my first check. ;)

If you recall, the members were voting when they had the Karma option, most of the useful members, as well as several of the D-Link moderators were getting hammered.  How soon we forget. :D  Voting here seems to run about the same as voting for the idiots in Washington, we let the incompetent do the selection.  ::)

If your DNS-323 has hardware version C1, the automatic power recovery should work on that one with the current 1.08 firmware.  At least that's the party line.

Probably a wise idea!  ;)  ;)

Oh, I recall that fiasco VERY well dude. That's why I retracted and said that maybe the voting should be done by the mods, then some would get a taste of being on the receiving end.  ;D

C1, 1.08 firmware and nope, when it goes down, it stays down! Methinks that the "party line" has run afoul of a few units that live in an altered state of reality. LOL! Not sure if there's anything that can be done though, this unit seems to have a mind of it's own on a few items. It likes to tease my 321 too, that unit used to hibernate nicely when it was on it's own. But now that the 323 has joined the party, the 323 hibernates fine but the 321 will sleep, then wake at unchartable intervals, then sleep again, etc etc. No rhyme nor reason, as usual. I think it's just nervous that it's being replaced, so it checks now and then to make sure it's not in a dumpster somewhere!  :D  :D  :D

Ah well, maybe a later firmware fix will make them play nice together eh.  :D

Yea, the UPS my NAS is on has a normal ON/OFF switch, not electronic controls.

Check?  What check?   ;D

Well I'm back again just checking on things.  It's good to have some free time.  Now I'm looking into another hardware mod for my DNS-321 to up the CPU speed.  Not sure if this will be an easy process or not but I do know I will need a small heatsink on the CPU chip.  I think that's a good idea anyway.  If I end up doing this mod and it works fine, I'll post it.  I need to do a little research first to see if there is a simple component to replace or jumper to install.  It won't be a walk in the park but shouldn't be too difficult either.  I'll know right away if it will be more trouble than its worth.  My goal is to significanlty increase my throughput.  I'd like to hit 30MB/sec using EXT2.

Quick update on my endevours...  Looks like the ARM9 C400 (400MHz) processor maybe clocked by a 375MHz Osc, vice 400MHz.  I think I'll have to put a meter on this one to check it out and I'm still trying to locate the datasheet for this specific processor (88F5-BEG1).  I think replacing the 375MHz Osc with something just under 400MHz might work fine.  It depends on if the other components are using this clock reference as well.

Go Joe go!  ;)  ;)

BTW, where can the specs be found for your hardware mod for the powerup after an outage? I'm curious to see if it's hardware version dependent or if it's good for everyone with a 321? What version did you get it working on?

You'll need a lot more than a 6% increase in processor speed to affect the throughput that much! :D

I'm not sure on this, but wouldn't it depend more or less on where the original bottleneck is? If it's because the CPU is almost completely dedicated to other functions now, then that speed increase could not only add to the networking function, but it could unload some CPU time from other functions too. That could theoretically give the network function more than a 6% boost?

It was short, so just my 1 cent on this one.  ;)  ;)

Ryder

P.S. GRJ, Joe, anyone have a thought on my post above dealing with my problem of the 321 waking up all the time now that I put a 323 online too? I'm plumb out of ideas on this one and it's driving me nuts!  :(

It's pretty hard to imagine that you'd get a doubling of the speed with that small an increase in processor power.  I'd be pretty shocked if that were the case.

My DNS-321 is currently sitting on the shelf until I shuffle some disks, so I can't comment on it waking up.  I'm currently running my DNS-323 and my new Synology DS209.  Now that I have the new DS209, I'm thinking of running both of the other boxes with a single disk and EXT3 filesystem.

Of course, a new job came in, and so I'm probably not going to get much time to screw around with this for a while... :)
