How short the ethernet suppose to be?
« on: March 14, 2010, 05:58:12 PM »

OK before anyone say about cat 6 cables. I have gigabit modem and a gigabit router. OK I just wondering how short the ethernet suppose to be to get the full speed from your modem to router. Is 1 ft is good between modem and router. Just wondering.

Basic answer: As short or as long as you want it to be. Doesn't matter.

Ethernet can be run hundreds of feet (295' without repeaters) so a couple feet or two will make no noticeable difference. Lift up a ceiling panel sometime in a office building and I think you will be surprised to see a highway of CAT5e running all over the place.

As a second note, having a 1000MB WAN port on a router is pointless under normal application. Its like making the speedometer on your car go all the way up to Mach 3. Just because it's there, doesn't mean you can use it. The bottle neck is going to be at your ISP way before you see any improvement with gigabyte, or CAT6 or any of that stuff.

I would still say the shorter the better, but as mentioned you probably won't be able to notice the difference unless you are actually hitting those super high speeds, which no ISPs are really capable of yet.  However, I would say its always nice to be ready for the future, Xfinity (formerly comcast) claims 100Mbps is on the way, so it would be good to have gigabit/Docsis3.0/wireless-N/cat6 cable for that and beyond!

FYI, I ran a 1ft Cat 6 from my modem to the 4500 and a 2ft from the 4500 to my switch.

Well the shorter the better for one reason, it's neater. You just won't see a difference in speed between a 1 foot vs a 3 foot. Or vs a 5 or 7 foot. Beyond that, why would you want your router that far away from your modem? Shorter is better yes, I just didn't want to reinforce the misconceptions that are so prevelent out there.

Also, Comcast, Cox, Time Warner and Verizon can sit down. Google Fiber FTW!  ::Ironically enough, I work for one of those ISP's...hmmm::
