Multiple users for a single share
« on: March 14, 2010, 07:16:39 PM »

How do i give multiple users access to the same share?
I want each user to have control of his/her own folder, and then also have some folders shared by different combinations. A user can only belong to one group, so group does not appear to be an option.
I had it in the past that multiple users could use a share, and the users were seperated by a "/" in the list. Somehow i messed it up, and can not recreate them that way. If using single user entries, the list overflow, and the second page is seldom selectable.

Any advice welcome.
Tinus.

I have not tested this -- other then setting it up -- but it looks like you can create a rule for a user as well as a group that user belongs to.

I set up a test group "Test"

and a test user "testing"

I assigned testing to the test group

I then added a permission to the testing user to their own folder -- and public access to a Media folder to the test group --

like I said I haven't tested it but I would think this would serve your purpose.

you could have multiple rules for each group so if you wanted to give all users access to one folder and two of those users access to a different folder you could create two groups and assign two rules to the second group

GideonOmega, thank you for the reply.
Let me try and explain my problem a bit further.
With a previous version of the firmware, i had single shares with multiple users (separated by commas) in a list of users that could use that share. After updating the firmware to 1.03, and recreating my security/access rules, multiple users can no longer be specified on a single share. You can specify a group or a single user.
As a user can only belong to one group, the use of groups are pretty useless, unless you consider all users equal on your network. I've got kids, so i do not want that to be the case.

How can i specify multiple users or groups with access to a single share? If the SMB access list is more than what can be displayed on a single screen, there is no way to scroll down and look at the latest rules created.

I like the DNS321, but configuring its access rules is a bit of a nightmare.
