655 bogs down and disconnects sporadically
« on: March 17, 2010, 12:28:11 PM »

I've been having issues with the 655.  The dl speed has been horrible when wireless < 1.5mbs but 13mbs when hardwired.  When I connect directly to the modem I get excellent speed. On top of that it drops the signal frequently.  I just purchased a new modem, thinking that would resolve the problem but no dice.  Finally got fed up and reset the router to factory settings in hopes it was a bad setting.   Started out promising but slid back into the the same issues.  Don't know if this makes a difference but I do not connect a computer to the router.  It's free standing and doesn't has a short distance to cover.

 :( ???

Any thoughts?

If your router or computer is near another high powered source of 2.4GHz radiation it could interfere. This could be, but obviously not limited to, cordless phones, microwave ovens, other wireless routers, some cellular phones, etc. It can also be a problem if the source is between the router and computer.

Thanks StarkRG for the reply but I don't think there is any substantial 2.4GHz radiation.  I don't have a cordless phone (went 100% cell) and the microwave isn't running when it drops.  Think my router is defective?  It's less than 6 months old...

A cell phone could still cause interference because the vast majority of US cell phones operate at 800MHz (even ones that are called 850MHz are actually 800MHz) which is a harmonic of 2400MHz (1/3). Bluetooth is also 2.4GHz. Because the 2.4GHz range is one of the highest frequencies universally allowed for unlicensed consumer products you'll find an awful lot of consumer devices use it.

I'll do some testing with the cells turned off.  Thanks Again!

wifi on my phones (BB & Palm) was without a question causing interference.  Speedtest confirmed this.

Thought I had the issue fixed by keeping wifi off on the phones but now the DL and connectivity issues are back.

This router is sucking up tons of my free time attempting to get it to function as D-Link says...

Here's a few things to try.

Have you tried doing a wireless network survey to see if there are other networks in your area using the same channel? I tend to not use the "Enable Auto Channel Scan" function. I prefer to do a survey and then manually set the router to each possible channel, doing a performance test after each change and then when they've all been tested, manually setting the channel to the one that gave the best performance.

Also, if you only have wireless G or N clients, it can be beneficial to set the 802.11 mode to exclude wireless B (or if you only have N clients, set it to N only).

If you are using WPA/2 security (which you should be, WEP is useless) you should use AES encryption in preference to TKIP if all your clients support it.

You can also get better performance if you turn off "Extra Wireless Protection" (in the Advanced Wireless section of the Advanced tab), although if I understand it correctly, doing this can cause issues for nearby wireless B networks so your neighbors might hate you for doing it (but I am not 100% clear on this).

Yes. Tired both 4 and 11 since the networks in my area were mostly on 6.  Seemed to help for a short while then back to >1.5 mb/s.  Changed back to "Enable Auto Channel Scan" didn't help.

Also, if you only have wireless G or N clients, it can be beneficial to set the 802.11 mode to exclude wireless B (or if you only have N clients, set it to N only).

Yes set to G and N only, didn't help, Changed back to all modes.

If you are using WPA/2 security (which you should be, WEP is useless) you should use AES encryption in preference to TKIP if all your clients support it.  Yes, not sure if all clients support other than they are able to connect.

Not aware of this.  Will give it a try... Sorry neighbors, but still using B? Oh well...

Thanks for your response!!!  8)

Do you have Windows 7 on your network?

If so, see my post ...
