Is manually power cycling my router every 2-3 days normal?
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:00:35 AM »

I have a DIR-825, HW version: A1, Firmware version: 1.12.

Every few days, I have to power cycle my router.  It becomes unresponsive in that wireless devices can't connect or they can connect but don't get external internet, wired devices are connected but don't get external internet, but all the lights on the front seem ok.

Power cycling the router fixes things.  I don't need to power cycle my Comcast cable modem.  Unfortunately, power cycling the router clears out its logs so I can never find out what state the router was in before I cycled it,.

This is getting rather tiring and I'm considering getting an extension cord with a switch in the middle of it so that I have an easier time power cycling it.

Is this normal?

I don't think it is normal. I have a Dir-825 but i don't need to power cycle it. The problem is that for me i have to power cycle my isp's modem every few days as well or I wont be able to access the modem's homepage. I contacted the manufacturer and they say that it might be a defective equipment problem and you should go get a replacement. Or it could be a over heating problem, and it's probably damaged itself by now. Making it stand up should help eliminate the overheating problems, there should be a vertical stand piece that comes with the Dir-825 so use that to help it stand up.

Edit: I also think it might be a problem with the router's firewall thinking that you are an internet worm and thinks that connecting too many times to the network is an attack. But the reconnections must of be a couple minutes apart, not like every 3 days.

Oh if you can, try setting up email notification under Tools>Email. This allows you to receive emails of the firewall logs or something.

Read the posts from earlier periods in this Forum.  It is very common for users to have to power cycle frequently.  Some more frequently than you.  The issue began with firmware 1.11, and did not improve with 1.12.  Some reported improvement with 1.13.  Others, like me, have moved on to other routers.   In my case I have repurposed my 825 as an access point where causes less disruption when it locks up.  I revisit this site periodically hoping to find a firmware update that produces the performance advertised by Dlink for this product.

Good luck.  By the way, you will see many posters reporting good luck with Netgear routers.  I went with a Trendnet 639 wireless N, gigabit router for about half of what I paid for the 825.  Not as many bells and whistles, but at least the Trendnet works.

I just posted a similar response on another thread about this. I was having the same problems with internet loss and router web page lockouts every 5 days, Rev-A hardware and 1.12 firmware. I upgraded to V1.13NA and have been running for 14 days without any problems.

14 days is a miracle, thank you.

I spent over a hundred hours stuck in the forum researching the drop outs, DIR-825 revision A1, six months back.  I made some kind of service change, can't remember, turning most features off.  Running 112NA and don't see the benefit of upgrading the firmware vs. throwing D-link in the trash.   Has anyone lasted more than 14 days on DIR-825 revision A1?

Thank you very much.  Now please let me rant.

THIS IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER PAID FOR.  WHEN IT WORKS, IT IS WONDERFUL ENOUGH TO GIVE IT TIME FOR D-LINK TO FIGURE OUT WHY IT DROPS.  WHEN IT HAPPENS EVERY THREE DAYS AND TO EVERYONE, IT'S JUST A SHAME.  THE PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE.

Thank you very much, that felt good.

Could you please make fixing the DIR-825 Revision A1 a sticky?

Power cycling any router normally every 2-3 days is NOT normal.  However, with experiencing a DIR-615 and 628 routers, I would say that with any D-Link router, YES, it is normal.

Runing hardware version A1 firmware version 1.13NA 78+ days since last reboot. Had same problem prior to this firmware. After you flash new firmware use the factory reset button and reload all your settings. DO NOT RELOAD FROM SAVED CONFIG FILE.
