Hello,

I have had the DNS-343 on my home network for a few months and have been very happy with it for the most part.

I have had an issue with a friend of mine trying to send me a 700MB file thru the FTP interface over the internet. It comes in at a modest speed for about 1 to 1.5 hours and then just terminates. The error at the other end states "An error occurred copying the file to the FTP server. Make sure you have permissions to put files on the server. The connection with the server has been reset."  

This cannot be a permissions problem and it starts copying the file anyhow. I have has 3 friends try from all different locations and fails in every instance. Can it be this box?

I have checked all though the menus and cannot find any timeout setting that would affect this issue. I am running 1.03 firmware.

Any suggestions out there?

Connection reset normally meant network problem.

However I do suggest you do a testing using local network & use ftp to upload the 700MB files...

Of course. Using a slow wifi network that will take about the same time that your friends do.
(As you say it will break at 1 hours)

I'm think that it might be a router issue...
Just think.

How is this done? If I try to connect to the FTP site from inside the network....the transfer completes without problem. It seems I have to have someone from outside to send me a large file to before it will fail...

It looks like the issue may be your router then. Please Check for new firmware for your router.

What client is being used for the transfer? What type of content is it? Movie file?

I had a friend send with an FTP client "File Zilla" but also tried tried just a copy/paste option to the FTP server within IE Explorer 8...both had the same result.

It was a 699 MB AVI file we tried to send in raw format and as a ZIP format...NO GO....

I also have the latest FW revision for my N router, which has been a good router and has not given me any grief at all.

It had been suggested to me to try another home router which I finally did. Well folks, that was the problem. I now have bought a better router and have tested long transfers between the DNS-343 and outside sources and the transfers complete now without problems and faster as well.

As a heads-up for the rest of us, what is the brand/model router that caused the issue and what is the new brand/model router that works?

The router that was giving internet disconnect issues was a Belkin N1 Vision router version 1165
The router that I am using now is a D-Link GamerLounge which is more designed for higher traffic throughput.
You probably would not need to go that high end with the router but wanted to be sure I did not burn out a cheaper router with high traffic flow.

Also, I have clients that connect to the server use a FTP client such as File Zilla. That way if the connection does get terminated, the client will attempt to reconnect and resume the transfer.

i just had my daughter change the .avi to .jpg workd fine. i renamed it 2 avi after xfer was complete. Soooo they did that so u couldnt exchange iso's, exe's, big zips & rar's?

i realy don't know just change the file extentio. reson we tried is because she was able 2 send a .jpg but not the avi so i suggested the extension change it worked.
