Cannot connect to network after someone else's laptop does
« on: March 21, 2010, 07:30:02 PM »

Hi I have a DWA-130 A1 running on a Vista platform that hasn't had any trouble in the past.

Recently, my housemate bought a desktop running Windows 7 (she previously had a Vista laptop) and bought a wireless adapter for it. Since then, whenever her boyfriend comes over to use the net with his laptop, my adapter can detect my network but no longer connect. If he turns off his wireless adapter and I restart my computer, my adapter is fine at connecting. He's come over plenty of times before with the same laptop and I don't think I've ever had any problems before.

The current wireless router is a cisco model (I am a student renting the house so changing the router isn't really an option).

Any suggestions?

Please let me know of any other information you  may need, I'm new at posting on the forums and I've probably missed mentioning something of relevance.

hello,
Not sure what relationship his laptop and her buying a windows 7 machine have to do with each other.  If you are suggesting that since she got windows 7 that somehow his laptop and yours are no longer working on the router together that seems a little strange.
YOu didnt state whether you are using wireless G or N on your laptop.
I would check the router itself and make sure the right wireless type is turned on such as wireless G and N if it is a mixed network.

I am reaching for long shots here.  I would check the ipconfig on both his laptop and yours and see if yours is showing an IP address assigned when his laptop is connected.  I would also try pinging the router from your laptop and see if you can ping it when you say it isnt connecting.
If you are not familiar with the ping command look it up on the net.  Basically you go into windows accessories and open up a command prompt window and type ping 192.168.1.1 or whatever the IP address of the router is and then hit ENTER on the keyboard.
See if you get replys listed when you do that.  If you do then you are hitting the router and it is responding back.  One very unlikely scenario is that your laptop and his may have the same MAC address.  I doubt this is the case but  when you look at the ipconfig you can see that.
I dont have any other ideas but I am sure if I were there I could troubleshoot it.  One other possibilioty is could a wireless phone in the house be in use while you are trying to connect?  This may be knocking your signal out if it and the router are on the same band.
Out of ideas, sorry
