Personaly I did try SharePort...
The problem is that the DNS-323 does not copy files directly to it.

Its transfering the files through the network to our computer, then from our computer to the USB... again through the network...

Its the same deal when trying to copy from 1 disk to the other in the DNS-323.... but at leat you have "Scheduled transfer" thats faster when it works correctly

Have you guys tried out the SharePort on the DNS-323?

Yes - it behaves as if the port is attached to the PC via a very long wire - so that the disk is attached to the PC, not the DNS-323.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

I'm pretty sure the idea here is to allow the DNS-323 to backup to this drive, not to simply have a remote access to the drive.  If you want that, just plug it into your computer's USB ports directly.

Reply to the suggestion of ECF regarding shareport on the DNS-323 :

The question should be has anyone managed to make shareport (3.0 client) and the DNS-323 work with Windows 7 64-Bit ? I would love to use it for the standard Windows backup but connecting to a disk simply does not work and usually I have to restart the DNS-323 afterwards as well to get back to normal.

To be able to use the USB port directly would be nice (I backup my DNS-323 once a month onto a small portable USB disk which I store off-site) but to get shareport working would be a real benefit...

I would LOVE to be able to plug in a USB drive to the back port for further storage.
Add another one to the "AYE" list ;)

One more vote.  I'd use it to allow one to easily create a backup of DNS based data onto an external drive to be moved to off-site storage.

Home-premium 64-bit works perfectly for me with the shareport. Connected a canon-pixma scanner/printer to it.

I too include my vote for adding this feature.  Besides the ability to backup data, high performance access would allow me to connect my WD 2TB external where I have my video library.  Accessing that on the network would remove the need for me to use my PC as a quasi-server for serving up movies to the living room.

Hi there, you shouldn´t expect "high-performance access" when talking about a device using a 500 MHz-cpu and 64 mb of ram...

kind regards, apollo

Well, you may expect "high-performance access", but you won't get it. ;)

I rather have a USB connection possibility without the SharePort software. Using Shareport on my router (D-link 825) in windows7 does simply NOT work. I have absolutely no confidence in this utility. Also running it under XP was very tricky when I tried it and quite instable.

I'm very interested if any of you have shareport working on a 825 router with Windows7 (32 bit OS version).

Are both your utility and firmware on the router up to date? I have tested Win7 SharePort utility with DNS-323 AddOn and did not have any issues.
