Is firmware upgrade really needed?
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:42:52 AM »

My router is still using firmware version 1.10 and I have absolutely NO problems.
I consistently get speeds of 20+ mb/s down and 1+ mb/s up.
Is there really any reason to upgrade?

Nope. You're only asking for problems. Honestly, if I were you, and you are still able to return it, I'd do so as quickly as possible and get something reliable.

Basically you will own the ''Toyota of routers.'' I wish I had coined this phrase, but that wonderful analogy belongs to someone else.

Also, as usual, and as expected, another thread that has gotten almost 2500 views and 113 responses, has been locked. Fortunately, several already predicted this and have taken ''word of mouth'' to other tech-related forums so that there is no running and hiding from accountability.

The track record is evident. The D-Link firmware development team has fumbled its way over the last two years to come up with nothing but problematic firmware, almost all of which hid behind the label of ''beta'', and which the development team disavowed themselves of and made owners responsible for problems using it.

Hi summerstormpictures,

I have two of these, one in my office and one at home.
I've had them for over two years and NEVER had a problem.
Why would I want to get something else?

Can I and all those plagued by these issues touch the hem of your garment?

But seriously, do you want another one? I'll give you a good price.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it  ;)

If you do not need the additional features and all works OK, there's absolutely no need to update the firmware.

And please disregard summerstormpictures. He has a personal vendetta or something going on with Dlink.

I would review the release notes to see if there are any "fixes" that would benefit you.  I wish I had before I make the jump to 1.3X, as do a lot of other members here.

You could read up on the number of people who are very frustrated with SecureSpot (myself included) and/or have decided to revert back to 1.2X to avoid issues introduced with the newer releases.

You have the luxury of thoroughly researching the various releases before you decide for yourself.

Exactly.  I'm running 1.11 firmware, and that's after having problems with 1.21 (back when you could "downgrade" your firmware).  1.10 and 1.11 were the most stable based on what I've read since getting my 655 a couple of years ago.

I would LOVE to trade my router running 1.33NA with one running <1.20.

my router is running 1.32NA, should i try to upgrade to 1.33NA?
i'm having some issues with shareport that i'm reading on other threads might be solved with 1.33NA, but i don't want to fix shareport just to destroy the rest of the router functionality...

and as a curious note, when i run the Firmware check in the router config, it says that "Current Firmware Version :1.32NA This firmware is the latest version" even tho i know 1.33NA is available.
is that because 1.33NA is 'beta'?

No, it's because that button doesn't work.  At all.

Upgrading to 1.33NA will be an improvement over 1.32NA from my experience.  You will be able to leave on DNS Relay, and you will have the added security of the HNAP fix.

It's my perception that outside of the fixes included in 1.33NA (as listed in the release notes) there shouldn't be any further downside from 1.32NA:  it also included SecureSpot which causes SO many other problems.

thanks.

besides the shareport, i'm not really having any other issues with the 655 and so far it's working well.
i'll try to flash to 1.33NA tonight.
hopefully that fixes my shareport issues.

Is there really any reason to upgrade?

Just follow the American mantra: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"...
If all is working well, what reason could you have to fix it? Most firmware-patches are meant only to fix issues. And if you don't have any issues... (Fill in the blanks here).

i tried 1.33na and had problems with lockups - a hard reset would clear it for two minutes or so before it would lock again.  I do use Securespot, and that service works great for me.  Fortunately I was able to back up to 1.32na

everything but shareport is working fine for me on this 655.
unfortunately shareport continues to drop the USB printer after a few hours until i reboot the router.
