Upgrading from 1.21 to 1.33 NA
« on: March 24, 2010, 02:46:35 PM »

I have been running firmware version 1.21 with Shareport version 1.15. I have followed all of the problems with the 1.3xx firmware versions to wait until the smoke has cleared before upgrading to the latest firmware. I also have the "downgrade-dir-655.rar" which lets me downgrade the firmware if the upgrade does not work.

I know many others have said that one should not upgrade if everything is working without any major problems, which is my case. But it appears that 1.33NA is pretty solid. The only thing I am temporarily worried about is the change from Shareport 1.15, which works with 1.21 and below to Shareport 1.10, which is needed for 1.3x and above. I have an HP 3005 USB Laser printer connected to my shared port and am naturally hoping that it will still work with the changed Shareport.

Why is the Shareport number for the later firmware less than the one for the earlier firmware ? Is it actually an earlier version ? If I upgrade my firmware, is the correct sequence:

1) Deinstall Shareport 1.15
2) Upgrade the firmware
3) Reinstall Shareport 1.10

Is the 1.33 NA firmware better/faster than 1.21 ? I know that is a loaded question but I am interested in what the 1.33 NA upgrade may bring in the form of a faster or more reliable network connection.

I have been told by some Dlink tech, over the phone, that 1.33NA is beta, if I understand correctly.  Try it and if you don't like it, you can download to 1.31, as was suggested to me.

be aware that dlink has apparently tweaked the shareport utility yet again to version 3.0 for windows....At least as of the other day when I tried to get a new download of 1.10, it was gone and 3.0 was in its place....

the 3.0 did work for my pc on 1.33FW A2 router, but it was a changed I hadn't seen any notices about.

Don't do it!

in case you didn't get that...

DON'T DO IT!

Please... for the love of God, don't make the mistake of "Upgrading"!!!

Just read throught hese forums and see what happens if you "Upgrade". You have the golden formware for this device and if you "upgrade" you will not be able to go back to a working router!

You just do not know where to look (or how to use FTP).

Does the 3.0 shareport utility workl with the 1.21 firmware or is it only for the 1.3x firmware users ?

Doesn't the "downgrade-dir-655.rar" downgrade allow me to go back to the 1.21 firmware if 1.33NA does not work out ?

i have never heard of this "downgrade-dir-655.rar". Where did you get it from?

you can downgrade your dir-655 from 1.33NA if you dont like it using this method, This Has Been Tested BY ME & IT WORKS! "Downgraded from 1.32NA" to 1.21

 1. download this modified dir-655 russian firmware (dont worry it's completly english! its also safe)

    http://depositfiles.com/files/qarqeqmft

 2. download the dir-655 firmware v1.21

    ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Firmware/

 3. Disconnect your router from the internet (unplug the cable!)

 4. enter your DIR-655's setup, Go To Advanced -> Firmware -> And Select DIR655A4_FW131RUB10.bin
then wait

 5. After that your firmware should say 1.31RU on the right top in your router's setup.

 6. Upgrade firmware again to the 1.21 firmware you downloaded. REMEMBER : Only after you applied RUSSIAN FIRMWARE you can upload 1.21

After upload, your DIR 655 will have the 1.21 very stable rom :)

You can also find the old shareport utility at ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/

It is just a compressed file which has:

DIR655A4_FW131RUB10.bin
DIR655Ax_FW131EUB02.bin
readmefirstt.txt

I do not remember where I downloaded it from but the link was in another thread in this forum so I trust it.

Thanks for the extended explanation. Also I already have the latest of the old shareport, version 1.15.9.

I gather this means that the new shareport 3.0 for the DIR-655 is only used by the 1.33 firmware, and that it works with both 32 and 64 bit Windows.

Yes, shareport 3.0 is for firmware 1.3+. i have never had a compatibility problem with shareport on 32 or 64 bit versions of windows.

after i upgraded my router to 1.3.1 firmware, i experienced a performance increasing. several bug i noticed also are fixed. my Dir-655 runs flawlessly now, except for shareport! after i upgraded, shareport worked worse! i have to reboot my router every time i want to use it (not that i use it any more), where on 1.21, i never had a problem! if you use shareport, you probably shouldn't upgrade to 1.33

Lose shareport for now and get yourself a little USB print server....the cheaper ones are not usually bi-directional...as shareport is...but for a $25 fix...it worked for me for my printer....get a NAS drive if you need hard drive off the router...
