Can't configer RAID 1 on my dns323
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:03:42 PM »

I have two WD 1T EADS Hard Drives and I cannot configer in a RAID 1 Array. Works in Standard setup just fine. Both drives seem to be functioning. When I reformat in RAID 1, just volume 1 shows up on my easy search program. The other drive is nowhere to be found. I have tried everything I can think of. Any ideas?

Hi DaveB43,

RAID1 is a mirror configuration. When you see the "drive" in XP you are actually seeing both drives since they are a copy of each other. And when you copy a file to Volume_1 in Explorer, you are actually copying that file to both drives at the same time. There is no point in showing both drives in Explorer since they contain exactly the same information in exactly the same format. So XP just shows you a "volume" in Explorer, in effect it is a display of the data that both drives contain since you can't add or delete anything on one drive without doing the exact same thing to the other one.

Hope this helps you in some small way.

You can also look in the web based interface and see if the NAS is running in RAID-1 mode. :)

Thanks for the answer. Is there a simple way to assure myself that Raid 1 is working and it is copying on the second drive, if I can't actually access the drive?  FYI...While my computers in the house right now run XP, one with Vista is coming back from repair. Will that give me the opportunity to see what is on the second drive?

Fire up the web configuration, select TOOLS from the top menu, then RAID from the left.

Under RAID CONFIGURATION it should tell you Volume_1: RAID 1 if RAID-1 is active.

Also, on the Status page, you'll see something like this under HARD DRIVE INFO

Total Drive(s):    2

Volume Name:    Volume_1
Volume Type:    RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining:    Completed

Note the Volume type and the fact that two drives are recognized.

You're very welcome DaveB43. And thanks redant2u, I try. As for the last answer, yet again GRJ has beaten me to the draw. Time to retire this old 6-shooter and get something quicker, like a nice little Glock or something!  ;D

And, good answer GRJ, just like I would have said. LOL!

How about a nice Beretta, good enough for the US armed forces.

LOL! Almost like the units our Canada Customs Border Guards carry, they use the 9mm Beretta PX4 Storm. Sorry, no pic though, couldn't find anything nice and clear for ya GRJ.  ;)  ;)

Well, I can always find good pictures of many of them, since I can simply take one out and snap the picture. :)
