setup: router not recognizing modem signal
« on: April 02, 2010, 09:52:26 PM »

new to the boards. I had the dir-615, had major issues where wifi would drop and I would have to re-set it up. A friend gave me a router her had lying around, unopened (dir 615) and I am trying to setup this router for the first time, I believe the h/w version is older (Rev A) and I bypassed the setup CD and plugged my modem into the router, then hardwired it to my PC (new HP laptop with Win7 64-bit) to setup manually. However, the router does not seem to recognize the signal from my modem. Modem is not the issue as I am hardwired to it right now without the router and internet is fine. I tried the setup CD wizard and I got to the last step where it sets it all up I get an error, multiple times. The modem and the router are not talking. The WAN light is not lighting up on this router when connected to the router then while plugged into my laptop I cannot get internet nor connect to the router's address to setup.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have tried rebooting both.

Just found out the router was purchased 2-3 years ago. was never used though. So its obviously old h/w. I also called my ISP and the modem is working fine, did a power cycle before starting up the router, powered down then fired it up. I just need to be able to get in to the router control panel. any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

What type of service?

Does your ISP require a username / password?

it is Cable internet. Rogers in Canada. And no u/n and/or p/w required. I had a dir-615 router and it setup without a problem (then had issues with it dropping wifi all the time). Thanks in advance for any guidance you can think of.

Look in the Advanced settings and tgry to set the WAN port speeds to a setting besides AUTO.

in the advanced settings in the router control panel? Cause I cannot connect to it. When I hook my modem to my router, the PC light on the router doesnt go green and it doesnt talk to the router so I cant get into the router to check/change anything. But the modem works.

Is there modem settings I can change?

It seems that you arre not receiving an IP from the router.  Are you 'renewing" the IP address when you connect the PC to the router?

I was under the impression that powering off the modem, plugging in the router, then powering both on would indicate to the modem that it was speaking to a new device and assign a new IP. Is there another method I should try if you believe this to be the problem?
