NEED HELP - BLOCKING LIMEWIRE AND FROSTWIRE PORTS
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:34:37 AM »

Hi I have attempted to block limewire ports and frostwire ports by going to access control and inside that going to 'Add Port Filters Rules' thingy but it makes no sense to me sorry... I'm a newbie to blocking ports. Can anyone tell me what to do in that section 'Add Port Filters Rules' to block limewire and frostwire because they use up allot of downloads because of other people in the house abusing the internet rules and me (the owner of the router) being ignored and having no way to stop it because of being powerless over what other people do on limewire and frostwire (this is other siblings though) my mother on the other hand thinks it's a good idea to block limewire and frostwire so can somebody please PLEASE HELP! I've tried yahoo answers, wiki answers. Nothing worked now your my last option D-Link Forum

DId anyone ever reply to this?

My son installed frostwire. The best idea - uninstall it. Add a local firewall rule to block it (Eg c:\program files\fristwire\frostwire.exe - assuming a default install).

Frostwire like limewire uses TCP/UDP ports 6346 and 6347. You need to block those. I also noted that my sons had been configured for 13507, but it can be changed to anything, so you could end up chasing the culprit for ever.

This is what my access control rule has...

In port filters, after setting up the access rule.

Name=Anything that makes sense to you. Mine says Frostwire
Dest start IP 0.0.0.0
Dest IP end 255.255.255.255
Protocol ANY (so you capture both TCP and UDP)
Dest port start 6300
Dest port end 6400

The add another entry for 13500 to 13510.

I've seen some posts say that you should block ports 10000-65535, but that will also block lots of legitimate programs too.

Note that this is not infallable. P2P programs are notriously difficult to block. Like I said at the start, uninstall the application. I installed MsAfee on the PCs, added limwire and frostwire to the list of disallowed programs, then password protected the configureation. Then they couldn't run the programs even after reinstalling it.

Good luck

Install DD-WRT firmware http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database onto the router then:

Go to http://192.168.1.1/Filters.asp

Blocked Services
Catch all P2P Protocols

Choose Gnutella and enter the port range. Same for other protocols. In case they're not listed find out what are they similar to and choose that.
Save

Hope this helps
