Range is horrible and can't connect to XBL
« on: April 08, 2010, 08:56:34 PM »

I just recently purchased and received the 4500 to replace my old Linksys WRT54GS. However, I cannot get a wireless signal unless I move my laptop to the dining room, closer to the router. Even worse is that I can't connect to Xbox live, no matter what I do, and yes I did read the Gamefuel sticky, although I did change the 802.11 mode to Mixed, rather than N or G only; which didn't let me connect to XBL anyway. I'm using the wireless N card for my Xbox, not a ethernet cable.

The FW is 1.21NA and the router is located in my roommate's bedroom down the hall. Short of upgrading to 1.22NA, what else can I do? I'm using a macbook if that makes a difference.

is your xbox getting an IP from the router?  Are you seeing a DNS in the xbox network settings?  Make sure you don't have an access rule that might be blocking the xbox live connection.

Personally, I would do a factory reset.
Flash it to 1.22
Verify that uPNP is enable in the router.
For testing purposes do not turn on the wireless security
Then have the xbox connect to the router.  Make sure it's set up to automatic. Do not use a static IP
Once it gets an IP, try to connect to XBLIVE.
If it works, then go to the router and add the xbox console to the reserve DHCP list.  This will force the router to always assign the same IP to the console. (uPNP seems to work better this way)

If everything is ok, then go back and enable your wireless security.  If everything is ok then proceed with adding your gamerules.

Try that and comeback to tell us how it worked out.

Review the Gaming and Gamefuel settings sticky. If your using XBL over WiFi, try to keep the band mode to G Mode only at 2.4Ghz. I prefer to run my 2 360s via wired. However my buddy in OK has his sons 360 setup as stated in the sticky and he has a total of 3 xboxes on his 4500, 2 wired, 1 WiFi.

I would upgrade to v1.22NA as v1.21NA wasn't the greatest FW and we all saw a lot of problems with it. I'm running v1.22NA on my 1st 4500. Let us know how this goes. I also have a MBP using N mode only.

I haven't got a chance to try you guy's suggestions since I last checked this thread, but I did switch the band from 2.4ghz to 5ghz that night, basically using only N band, which works great for my macbook, and I can connect to XBL now, BUT, I have to test network configurations every time I want to sign on to XBL, it won't sign me on automatically like it used to >:( Not to mention, my iPhone doesn't support N band, so I'm stuck on using 3g...

I will give your suggestions a go once my roommate gets back tomorrow, hopefully it'll solve my woes, if not, then I must return this to newegg and get a Apple Airport :-\

You need to chk and review the Gaming and Gamefuel settings. Ensure you setup a Static IP address for the Xbox and get those GameFuel settings in place and check the DNS addresses in Basic/Internet/manual, enter them in if there blank. You shouldn't have to TEST the connection to get signed in. Means there is a configuration problem if you have to do this step.
