Filesharing over LAN not working
« on: April 17, 2010, 06:12:12 AM »

Last week I replaced my old WRT54-GL with a DIR-655 and from then on, LAN filesharing didn't work anymore. All settings from SSID to encryption type have remained the same and all my Vista clients have the same settings as they did before.

When I go to Start > Networks on any of them, however, the only devices that are listed, are the router and themselves. After googling the issue, I read it could be solved by enabling MAC-filtering. After doing so, the remaining clients do show up in the Network screen, but I still can't access them.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might cause/solve my issue?

Crete a new SSID for your network and remove the old one from the computers, as you have a completely new MAC address involved with the network.  The clients are confused because they have associated the original SSID with the MAC address of the old router.

Hi Pjotr84,

What software Firewall is being used? What Anti-Virus package s being used? Are you using Network Magic or a similar program? Do you have the same operating system version of each computer or different and what are they?

Do you have logging enabled on the Router and have you viewed the log ablout the time you tried to share?

Just to rule things out, I've disabled all software firewalls. As for antivirus, I'm using AVG on all clients, and all are running Vista SP1. I hadn't thought of checking the logs, but I will, as soon as I get a chance.

Perhaps, you may like to check if you have enable Wlan partition.

Wlan partition is at Advance - advanced wireless.

The purpose of this Wlan parition is Isolate the inter connectivities of various client communication.  Once this is checked to enable, all clients will not able to communicate with each other.

Hope this may help

Hi Pjotr84,

Don't forget to upgrade to Vista Service Pack 2 on your Vista Computers. Can't hurt, might help.

I would give this a shot if I were you.  On each individual computer within your LAN, get into your wireless settings and tell your systems (actually it's your NIC settings) to "FORGET" the current network.  Then go back on each of the systems and rejoin.  Each time that you develop this problem by changing Routers, or whatever the reason, you should be able to take care of it in this manner and still be able to use the SAME SSID.  Sure it's more work using this method as you have to do it on each and ever system within your LAN, but doing it this way will clear everything out of the NIC's "MEMORY" (for lack of a better way of putting it) and more easily allow you to change routers as much as you like (otherwise the SSID/SHARED KEYS...etc that you set up the NIC's with will always clash with the new routers setup.  Just MHO.

First of all, thanks for all your suggestions. I tried turning off "WLAN partition" just now, but that didn't help.

My log is giving the following entry, when I try to access one of the clients on the network:

"Blocked incoming TCP connection request from * to *"

Edit: Turning off "WLAN partition" must have helped after all, since after I rebooted the computer I was working on, I was suddenly able to connect to the other clients. Thanks for your help, guys!

Edit2: Could this also have been the cause for me not being to play Gears of War over LAN?
