wireless N speed issues with 1.02 firmware
« on: April 17, 2010, 01:53:40 PM »

I've had a DIR-655 running firmware 1.02 for three years. I've never really had a reason to upgrade the firmware, and the last time I looked there was no option to upgrade while saving my settings. I have MAC addresses, port forwarding, and schedules set up that I just don't want to set up again if I can help it. And I've been reading about all of the problems people have had after upgrading. Anwyay, now I have a Wireless N adapter (AWLL5077) for my netbook and it only connects at 30-45 mbps when the specs say it should be connecting at 150 mpbs. I have tried everything in the sticky except upgrading the firmware. I have several other wireless devices that use g (including a Wii) so I have it in 802.11ng only mode, channel width Auto 20/40 MHz, WPA-Personal/WPA2 Only. I saw one post on the reviews of the adapter where someone said s/he got it working with the DIR-655 after some fiddling but s/he didn't elaborate.

Should I upgrade my firmware? If so, to which version? I have no interest whatsoever in SecureSpot, so I'm thinking 1.20 looks promising. If I do upgrade, will it save my configuration or will I have to rebuild it? Do you think this will solve my N speed issues? Lastly, are there any security flaws fixed in these firmware updates or are they purely feature enhancements?

Hi,

Verify your settings in the 655 setups for the WLAN Partition setting....change it from whatever it is set at currently....if its disabled, enable it...or vice versa....

See if that helps.  You might also need an udated driver for that wireless adapter...that can have huge impacts if the driver isnt behaving itself.

I don't see WLAN Partition settings anywhere. I'm in Setup -> Wireless -> Manual Wireless Network Setup.

Settings are:
Enable Wireless (checked)
Name (filled in)
Enable Auto Channel Scan (checked)
Wireless Channel (greyed out due to above)
802.11 Mode: 802.11ng only
Transmission rate: Best (automatic)
Channel Width: Auto 20/40 MHz
Visibility Status: Invisible
WPA Mode: WPA 2 Only
Group Key Update Interval: 3600
PSK (filled in)

Should I be looking for this somewhere else? Maybe it isn't in this version of the firmware?

Hi,

On mine, fw 1.34-Beta its under Advanced...then Advanced Wireless

One of the check boxes....

You might also try setting the Auto 20/40 to just 40...if thats in the 1.02 FW....I don't recall the options for the wireless bandwidth....

I didn't find WLAN Partitioning in Advanced, but I did find this (which might just be what they used to call it):

Extra Wireless Protection
Extra protection for neighboring 11b wireless networks. Turn this option off to reduce the adverse effect of legacy wireless networks on 802.11ng performance. This option is available only when 802.11 Mode is set to 802.11ng only

It is worded a little strangely, but from what I gather it needs to be unchecked in my case and I had it checked. I'll give that a try. Thanks for your input.

P.S. There is no option for 40 only, just auto or 20.

For the record, turning off "Extra Wireless Protection" seems to have done the trick. I'm connected at 150 mbps now (as high as that adapter goes; I didn't know there was more than one "tier" of wireless N when I bought it).

Hi,

If I recall, the .11N specification can go as high as 600 Mbps if you have all goodies...many of which dont exist yet....

So we have to be happy with 300 max for now....
