New Guy With ?
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:30:39 AM »

Hi new here no real trouble in fact very satisfied with 655's, (esp. n) performance. Except I want to turn off my SSID on network taskbar. Been to support and online manual, maybe I am to dim to see a box that might say "hide SSID" or such. Maybe it is more invovled. Or maybe I am to impatient. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Win 7-64 op sys. Thanks, DVS.

I believe that you could click Setup... wireless settings... manual... and select invisible for Visibility Status.

At least, that's what the emulator shows:  http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/dir655/121/Basic_Wireless.html

Invisible or visible in the Wireless Setup is good, however, that is the status that is "broadcast" to computers that have not been configured to recognize your SSID.  That means strangers.  If you have programmed your router information into your computer, then it is up to your computer settings to be able to hide such information on your desktop.  That depends on your operating system.  You should change the settings to your taskbar to "hide" your network icon completely.

Ooops.  My apologies.  I read the problem description and jumped to the conclusion that it was the SSID that you wanted to hide, not the taskbar status.  marmoduke's got the answer here.

Thank you for the help! I wanted to stop my ssid from being broadcast for anyone to see. Right now I can "see" two other system's ssid being broadcast.
After doing further reseach, I have read that your ssid visibility can or cannot be a problem.
but  since Win XP and up, it takes "care" of someone backtracking or turning off your ssid. (?)
Sorry if I seem a little out of touch. I quit using windows after Nt4.0 and have been using a mac (gasp)
for ten years. I have to adjust to all the security measures I forgot that comes with the Windows experience. I have a lot of reeducation ahead.
Thanks again and best regards, DVS.
