Wireless Security Settings keep turning off
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:32:18 PM »

Hey all,
been using the 4500 for over a year now, had some similar issues with speed and loss of connetion, all of which I can handle. What is bothering me is the router is somehow not maintaining the security settings for the wireless portion of the network. I have had to log back into the device and turn the security options on 4 or 5 times now and I am confused.
I don't have any NASA secrets here, but my wife and I both use the home network to VPN into our places of work and it is making me uncomfortable when I see my wireless network broadcast out there and it is wide open.
Can someone explain why this is happening or at least how to stop this from happening again?

Thanks ever so much!
Bill
PS:
I have:
Current Firmware Version :  1.21NA
Current Firmware Date : 2009/07/09

FYI:
I just noticed the router system time is off, January 31 2004. Again.... I also have had to reset system time several times.

 ???

Grade to v1.22NA, v1.21NA had a few issues with hanging, loosing internet connection and some WiFi issue. Let us know how it goes.

To update, save off your configuration file if your 4500 is specially configured. Use IE or FF to save the file.
Upload the new FW file. After it reboots, choose the reset factory defaults.
After it reboots upload your saved config file so you don't have to reconfigure everything again manually.

Let us know how this goes.

When you say they go off, what do you mean? Do you mean the it get sets from WPA to no security? What about the SSID? Is the whole thing going to default. I wouldn't suggest upgrading the firmware without isolating the problems, or else you complicating the issue. First thing that comes to mind when someone tells me their wireless security is being turned off...who is turning it off? Young one wanting to play the PS3 and cant get it to work? Neibor crack your WEP? IT remoting in? Its very rare to loose only part of your configuration file..and repeatly the same part, with no other symtoms. I suspect more to this story.

1. What wireless security type are you using?
2. When you lose those settings, does your SSID change?
3. During any of your troubleshooting, are you holding the button down on the back of the router?
4. Does the loosing the settings corinside with a loss of internet through the wired connections?
5. What do the logs say?

The SSD may or may not have changed when the settings were "lost". I left the SSD as dlink so I am unsure that it changed.
I have changed the SSD to a different name and used my save file to restore the settings.
I think I am going to go ahead and upgrade the firmware as looking back at my notes, this is the 6th time the router's wireless settings have been rolled back to as if I never set it up.

I have all my hardware behind a APC unit so there are no power outages or surges, I have fiber optic internet to the house and have no power lines ect here to cause electrical issues.

I don't see how one portion of the router (wireless) could become unstable unless the wireless is on a separate board internally and has it's own capacitor for memory storage.

No worries, I will try the firmware and if all fails, then I will get a new dlink product.  ;D

I'll let ya know how it turns out.

I would update to v1.22NA. This should fix your issues. Let us know how it goes.

I really think your not seeing the forest behind the trees. When you bought the router, did you secure it with a network password that you had to enter in each indivual wireless connection?

I am thinking no. If I had to speculate, you bought the router and hooked it up with no wireless security. And the security your talking about is the VPN settings, port forwarding and firewall. Your IT hooked that up for you? But they never secured it either. No doabt your VPN settings are messing with Billy's Limewire nextdoor, and he is logging in and turning the settings off or reseting to factory?
