« on: April 22, 2010, 05:43:20 AM »

I have 2 laptops, xbox 360 and wireless printer using the router. I have the ip address for the xbox 360 in the port forwarding. I want him seperate from me. When I download he lags. Oh boy. How can I make sure he is on the 5ghz and will that help. As you can tell I am not into the networking part of computers but I am a programmer so I am always ready to learn.

Two things:

1) the 5GHz band doesn't do wireless-G which is what Xbox360 uses (as far I know)
2) If you're downloading from the Internet at the same time he's connected to the Internet using xbox live, unless you have 2 internet connections you'll be stepping on each other's toes.  The dual-band will spilt the connections on 2 separate bands, but you only have 1 internet modem, hence 1 connection of bandwidth available.  If you're maxing that out while downloading it will affect him.  You can try QoS settings to give priority to the Xbox to see if it won't make him lag.

you'll need a dual band gaming adapter to seperate your XBox 360 to the 5 Ghz band.  Then set the adapter up to use only the 5 Ghz band to connect to the router.

What kind of internet service do you have that's causing you lag?  I have Comcast cable that runs at 25 Mbit and get no lag.

Ok,

Is this the gaming adaptor you mean.
Do you know how I can tell what is taking the most band width from where. I would like to utilize the router but I don't know how.

no, that is a Wireless G gaming adapter.  It is not very fast, compared to Wireless N or Wireless A..

The adapter needs to be a dual band, 2.4 and 5 Ghz adapter and it needs to use Wireless N, not wireless G.
