100Mbps network performance
« on: April 22, 2010, 09:47:02 AM »

Here's my setup:

10/100 router/switch
Laptop with 10/100 NIC
Desktop PC with 10/100 NIC
DNS-321, FW1.03, 2 x 500GB drives, RAID1, EXT3

All network connections are 100Mbps full duplex.

Transferring a single large (1GB) file between the laptop and the desktop takes about 2 minutes, or about 8MB/sec.  This is probably about as good as it gets with 100Mbps.

When transferring the same file between either machine and the DNS it drops to HALF that, about 4MB/sec.  It would appear that the DNS is the bottleneck in this system.  Others on this forum are reporting DNS transfers of > 10MB/sec -- granted they're using GBE -- but still I was hoping to approach the 8MB/sec performance that I'm getting with the PCs.  Any suggestions?

I should mention that it shipped with firmware v1.02.  I installed 1 drive and formatted it as EXT3.  Then did the firmware upgrade to v1.03, then added the second drive and setup RAID1.  I did NOT do a load factory defaults after the FW upgrade, probably should have.  I'll try that tonight and reformat the drives and see if anything changes.
