Web Based Utility won't connect
« on: April 24, 2010, 12:27:58 PM »

Ok so im not a typical user setting this thing up wrong, i just can't get a response from 192.168.0.1 on ANY browser on ANY pc.

I managed to get it once right after a reboot but apart from that it just times out when connecting, im using it as an access point/switch (i.e not using WAN port).

Anyone else know of this? Faulty unit?

Firmware is 1.21
Hardware is A5

Its brand new  :-\

EDIT: I run the Wizard CD included and i get as far as connecting the router to the pc using a LAN port and it comes up with an error saying the cable is not properly connected, tried 3 different cables.... makes no sense at all. HEELLLPPPP

Why don't you describe "HOW" you have the cable connected to your LAN setup.  Then maybe someone would be able to begin helping you.

I would make darn sure that you're utilizing the "WAN" / or "INTERNET" port properly if it were me.  That is at least a good starting point.

Yea good point, im using it to extend my ADSL router elsewhere in the house.

Ethernet cable from ADSL router into LAN port on Dlink, ethernet going to other devices, last port is number 4, which i plug my laptop into to set it up. Im simply using it as a wireless switch and im not using the WAN port or Internet port as im receiving the DHCP from my other router. I can get on the internet with wired and wireless but i cant log into the router to change anything =/

First, when you say you can't log onto the router, which one are you speaking about?  Assuming that you're speaking of the DIR-655, I'm not totally sure about this, but since you're using the DIR-655 as simply a "Switch", I'm going to assume that you've already disabled the DHCP on the DIR-655 and your other Router is assigning IP addresses.  This is the part I'm not to sure of as I've never had a setup like what you're doing.  But wouldn't the ADSL router be assigning the DIR-655 an IP address, I mean wouldn't even the "Switch" need an IP address?  And again, wouldn't the ADSL router be assigning that address?  Also, if in fact it is the DIR-655 you're speaking of, that would also be the reason why you couldn't log into its web page, because it has been assigned another IP address (or at the very least it has been changed somehow).  Well, I hope that this helps you in some way.

Set your 2nd routers IP address to one that is outside of the DHCP range of your ADSL router
ie: DHCP range of ADSL router = 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.200
Then set 2nd router LAN IP to 192.168.0.x (2 to 9 or 201 to 250)
Turn off DHCP in 2nd router
Log into 2nd router GUI by using the 192.168.0.x (LAN IP you assigned it). Make further changes.
That will get you started.

Thanks for the reply, for some reason i cant log into my dlink even when it is not connected to my adsl router, meaning its ip hasn't changed and i hit the reset on the back to make sure of this.

Also my adsl router doesn't seem to even know its there and is not listing it as an ip or even a mac addy.
This makes no sense seeing as how it is running the lan through my dlink....

The one time i did manage to get into the dlink, i turned off dhcp and saved settings then it had to reboot and after that i couldn't connect to the web utility again.

EDIT: My second router (ADSL) is set to .1.254 (BTHomehub)

The dhcp starts at 192.168.1.64 and ends at 192.168.1.237

SOLVED

When i initially set it up i plugged the other router in first, either it changed it automatically or i did it in error but i did not have the router address in the same subnet and thus i could not find its IP

Thanks for the help!!  :D
