What other router would you choose....
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:17:48 PM »

I have been having serious issues with Secure Spot and Access Controls in my 655 router since I bought it last week.  After HOURS and HOURS with support they said the router was bad and I should return it.  Since this was bought online it was a pain, but I did as told and received a new router a week later with the exact issue.  More hours of support later and they tell me there is nothing they can do about it.

My point is this, after all the time I spent with them, they never ONCE said anything about the well known and documented issues with Secure Spot and Access Controls.  If this is how they are going to be, then I have to wonder if I want this router or not.  However, I can't seem to find a router with the same software capabilities.

I'm looking for a router where I can manage access based on keywords by MAC address and send a log file to an email account which tells me that when a rule was violated.  Every other router I have found requires an agent on the PC and doesn't manage wi-fi connected devices like iPhones/iPods.  D-Link's Access Controls seem to be the answer but won't work with Secure Spot enabled.  I refuse to pay them an additional $30 bucks to monitor my traffic usage when the included firmware can handle it for free.

What routers would you suggest if D-Link doesn't fix this issue?

Hi There,

There is no need to return this router - it is an excellent door stop   :D

Nearly - 20 000 posts which are essentially troubleshooting a router !!!!

Trust me - I have disabled every piece of "intelligent" network / stream handling option on this and still somehow manage to get around 5kbs transfer rate !!!!! Must be solar flares affecting the earth's atmosphere  again  ???

I have never seen such great speeds since the days of using a 15 year old dial up modem trying to download a picture from a bulletin board  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

My old router probably about 6-7 years older still works better without problems.

If you dont want to use as a  doorstep, I would suggest get your money back asap !!

Again this is my personal opinion based on my experience, others may have different experience ....

Thanks.

Short and simple: you get what you pay for. It is not an expensive router, and D-Link people really should clean up their act, but it is a low price to pay for a doorstop... You could go for a competitor's model, but read their fora and see for yourself that even there people have issues with the scala of routers available...
