I'm looking to buy the DGL 4500 wireless router but I have a few questions, if anyone could help me out with some answers I would appreciate it allot. I'm currently hooked up to a wired connection with a cisco modem and linksys router, would I be able to hook up a wireless router to the wired router so I can get my PS3, Wii and Ipod on wifi?, or have the wireless router wired connected to my PS3, Wii and use the wifi for my Ipod?. I am new to hooking up wireless and have no clue on how to achieve setting up a wireless router so please bare with me.

You could use the DGL4500 to do that, but you don't really need another router if you already have one and like it.  You might consider replacing your old router with this (presumably) newer one, and this one is also gigabit for what its worth.  But what you're describing you could do with a less expensive wireless access point, which plugs into the router.

Well the thing is, I'm living with my father right now and his modem and wired router is hooked up in his room because of the wiring problem that the contractors screwed up when they built the house, so he doesn't want to go wireless on his end for gaming but I would like too. My only choice is to use two routers, one wired connected to the wireless. It will still help me out in the end because I'm going to need it once I save up and move out on my own. So I am definitely capable of hooking up a wired modem and router and having the wireless router hook up through the wired router?. I play allot of on line games primarily BBC2 & CODMW2 so I figured this routter would be good to get, unless you think I would be better off with the DIR 825-855?.

So the modem and router are in his room. He doesn't want to go wireless, and thus he doesn't want the router in your room? If this the case, it makes alot of sense. But then why not just connect the new router (this router)to his modem? 4500, like most wireless routers, have 4 wired ethernet ports. Just use wired for his room and go wireless to yours. Or run a ethernet wire from his room to yours. Or get Poweline network adapter.

If he doesn't mind the router in your room, call your ISP and pay the 30-40$ to move the modem into the other room and get a outlet reconfigured in there. As long as they don't have to wallfish, they should be OK. Also, they won't be able to configure the 4500.

The main reason why I don't want the wireless router directly connected from my dads room to my room is because of having to run multiple cables for various things into my room. Another reason why I want the router in my room is so I can check the router when needed, my dad usually keeps the room shut when he is asleep and locked when he is gone so I wouldn't be able to get in and fix it if needed. I really don't want another internet connection built into my room, he has Docsis three, the highest speed for internet.

I'm just saying you don't need another router, as only one is necessary for a home network.  You need a switch really, which would be cheaper, or an access point to plug into his router to have a wireless connection.

Ah, what is a switch if you don't mind me asking?, I am really newbie to this stuff so I don't understand it very well, I'm good with software and hardware PC stuff but not wireless networking. Please, bare with me. lol.

What wireless router would you guys recommend for using for on line gaming, PS3, Wii, and Ipod Touch Wifi hookup?. I really want to get one that will give good singal, range and work well with all three. I'm thinking of the DGL 4500 but I keep going back and searching the DIR 825 and 855 too, I am so clueless on which to get and which would benefit me more, especially using Docsis 3 internet.


  Please help me out, I really don't want to buy the wrong one. :/

A switch is just a device that connects more computers to the network, whereas a router is doing the job of taking the internet connection and splitting it up for multiple computers.  Sinces there's usually a few connections or perhaps wireless on a router, those are also switches for the physical or wireless connections.

If I buy the wireless router could I set it up to be wired from one wired router to the wireless then the wireless router wired to my desktop?, and have my PS3, Wii and Ipod touch hooked up wireless?. I'm going to need the wireless router once I move out anyhow so that is the option I want to stay with if that is possible.

Yeah that would work, just be sure to turn off DHCP on the new one, I like this dgl4500 a lot, its fast as all hell, but others have complained about lots of issues.  Seems the latest firmware is good though.  As I keep saying, people only come on to this forum to complain usually, so its tough to tell what percentage of people really have problems.  I use it for wireless PS3 gaming a lot, no issues.

Could you please explain to me the pros and cons of the DGL 4500?, I would like to get someone else's opinion who owns the product. Also, does the manual do any good for setting it up?, I do not know all the advanced setups for wireless, I will barely get by with doing the auto setup if it works. Does the PS3 automatically connect to the wireless router or will I need to set that up also?. Will I need to turn off the DHCP only from the wireless hookup or will I need to do it from both wired & wireless?. I went into my linksys router settings and it is turned on at the moment.


  By the way I really appreciate everyones suggestions, ideas and help. I need all the help I can get, I am dumb when it comes to wireless, so thanks a bunch. lol.

Look at the Gaming and game fuel sticky. This seems to work well for the 4500 and general use. Works well for me and others I've helped with there 4500.

I went ahead and bought the DGL 4500 and it should be here tomorrow morning from fedex, wish me luck guys, hopefully I am able to set this stuff up or else I'm SOL.
