interesting DIR 655...
« on: April 29, 2010, 10:16:56 PM »

I have a cable modem and a DIR 655 upstairs with a network setup throughout the house.

Downstairs, I have a d-link USB DWA-130 on the computer i'm posting on right now.

From down here, I'm experiencing the worst connection i've ever experienced. Its extremely sporadic and most of the time i can't do basic things like load youtube videos without waiting over five minutes.

I am trying to find the underlying problem for this, and then went upstairs and updated the firmware on my DIR 655 to 1.32. The last update I had was 1.21.

For a little while things seemed to be getting better (a few hours at most) but now its back to the terrible slow and sporadic connection. Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here?

Also, do I need to be download all of the firmware updates in between or just the latest one?

Please be gentle, I'm aware of how noob i am.

thanks!

No, you don't have to do updates incremently, you can just put on the latest one.

I would put more of the blame on the USB adapter, those seem to have more connection issues than a regular card adapter.

Also, you can try adjusting the router's antenna positioning to see if you can get a better signal.

If it got better for a while, and dropped again, it could also be environmental... By using a scanner-program (like INSSIDER) on your PC, you can find out what other wireless routers/clients are active in your neighbourhood (both near router and in basement)? You could find a quiet channel and set both router and DWA-130 to that channel.

Are there times during the day when it seems better/worse?

Position of antennae is important too, as davevt31 mentioned. Are you using wireless-n only, -n/g combo or full blast (-a/b/g/n) as protocol?
