i can't for the life of me figure this out.  I two identical computers hooked up to the 4500 router.  One gets a test speed of 70+ Mbps, while the other only gets 6Mbps connected to the same router.  They are not wireless, but directly connected. 

The one that is slower runs fine when the modem is connected directly to the pc and get 70Mbps.  Once connected to the router is when the speed on that one dropps. 

I verified the cables are good, nic speed is set properly, tried different wan ports on the router, upgraded to the latest firmware, etc...basically tried most of the tips on the forum that I found were revelant to my issue. 

I even ran the pc with the bare miniumum of services running with the same slow resutls via the router, but ok directly connected. The pc that slows down when on the router is the one that was originally hooked up to the modem when first set up.  Yes, I also have it set to get the ip info automatically.

How are you measuring this?  What kind of internet service is it?  Would you expect 70mbps, that seems high?

hey zippoking.  Here's are the answers to your questions:

1. doing a speedtest by going to http://speedtest.comcast.net/
2. I have Comcast as my ISP
3. I'm paying for the 50Mbps down speed.  The tech indicated I'd average around 60Mbps with a high of 90Mbps.  So 70Mbps has been the constant on all the other computers except this one.  The wireless ones even get a better speed than this one.

Static IPs?  If so what if you switch them?

I only have one pc with a static ip, all others are auto assigned.  The one that I'm having problems with speed with is a non-static.  I tried using a static ip as well with no changes in the results.

Just wanted to add some more info.  Over the weekend, I went out an purchased a GB pci nic card with new patch cables as well.  Same result.  Directly connected, super fast at 70Mbps...via the router...7Mbps.

I would make contact with DLink and ask them if there could be an issue with the router. Are you using the router as is out of the box or have you made any configurations to it?

Are you seeing a lot of outside activity being filtered by the router?  Check the logs to see.  An outside attack (or perceived attack) coming in at 70Mbps would probably swamp the router.  Turning off SPI may help (but arguably reduces your security).

Well...I don't think it is an issue with the router now.  As a test, I booted this problematic pc in safe mode and tested the speed via the router (safe mode with networking).  I got a 77Mbps speed test...then booted it normally, dropped to 7.5Mbps.  I have some Cisco VPN software and other networking things that are run in normal mode so that is the direction I'll start looking at.

I appreciate everyone's replies.  I don't want to take up anymore of user's time on the forum since this is no longer a router issue as it appears now.  Thanks again.

i had a similar problem, although i didnt have any Cisco software. the problem (which i though was related to windows 7 somehow) was actually with the routers settings. the problem lies with 1 or 2 things. #1, disable Automatic Uplink Speed on the Advanced--Gamefuel tab.  set the manual uplink speed to its max setting (2048) or type in your own if its higher.  if that works, great. if not, disable Enable Advanced DNS Service on the Basic--Internet--Manual Configure tab.  hope this helps! i know it did for me.
