new owner with a quick question
« on: May 04, 2010, 09:31:18 PM »

hi, new 323 owner with a hopefully basic questions.

i purchased the 323 with the sole purpose of creating a media server. i already have an external drive working as a backup for my laptop and had envisioned using one bay in the 323 with an existing 1.5TB drive from an external enclosure for movies and then adding a second 2TB drive for music. now i realize my option for this is standard formatting as the drives are mismatched, but has anyone run into problems with having two drives of different capacities in the 323?

might be a lame question, but before i dropped $$$ on a 2TB drive i thought i would ask.

Hi i would run the disks as single disks (not in raid) and you shouldn't have a problem.

It seems that the 323 has an issue with 4tb raid arrays.

You won't have a problem running the system with 2 diffrent disks (i'm running with a 2tb and a 300 gig atm)

I believe that you can only have one media source, so you will not be able to have movies on one drive and music on the other drive both running from the uPnp AV server.

so conflicting thoughts. would there be value in formatting both for JBOD? or could you add a second drive later via JBOD?

what would the reason be for not having two drives with a upnp server?

You can set the UPnP AV media server to the root which will include both drives indexing all media files supported on the unit available for playback.

You can run the drives as RAID1 and the remaining 500GB will become a separate volume, however it is recommend to have to identical drives when running RAID.

understood on the RAID, i was trying to avoid it because i really do not need the mirroring aspect of the NAS, but would instead like to get the max storage out of the box - at this point it would be 3.5 TB. Is it then possible to run itunes server off of one drive and UPnP off of the other?

Yeah you can set the UPnP AV media server to a specific Volume and the iTunes server to the other, that shouldn't be an issue at all.

As i'm doing it using XBMC is

Inside 323
1 x 2tb hd full of movies
1 x 2tb hd more movies, music and tv shows

Inside ideq media pc
windows 7 x64
1.5 tb full of mixed content
XBMC installed using the Aeon hiched skin

I map 2 x network drives using Easysearch to the root of both drives in the NAS then use XBMC to add the folders from all drives (323 and ideq) as you can have multi sources for movies, music, tv shows, games, so on...

Because you can add multi source it mergers the content in the menu's

at the moment the system is running 1560 movies, 1670 tv shows. There will be more soon more but i need time to scrap the movie info and artwork
