Frequent short freezes/lockups
« on: May 08, 2010, 09:52:23 PM »

I've been experiencing frequent short freezes/lockups accessing my DNS-321. Steaming music/movies will hang for ~10-15 seconds before resuming just fine. I've updated my firmware to the latest (1.03) and it still happens.

My drives are 2x 1.5T Seagate model ST31500341AS set up in RAID1.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Other than the freezes making it frustrating to stream anything, it's working great as a backup/storage disk.

I have the same problem.

It's really bad if I'm copying big files to or from the device. When I'm doing that, I cannot accees anything else on the NAS.

I play music files from the NAS and when  I'm copying big files to or from the device, music stops, plays a moment... stops.... and so on.

I'm connected via a Gigbit switch, and I'm using cat5-E cables.

If you saturate it with a single task, that's probably expected operation.

My issue isn't when doing multiple tasks. If I have one computer connected to it and try to stream a single mp3, it goes about 60 seconds then freezes completely for about 10 seconds. During that time the entire thing is unresponsive; I can't open the admin page or can't get a file list in windows explorer until it unfreezes.

That sounds like the hard disks are doing data recovery, have you run the SMART tests on the drives?

I've never run it before, but did a quick test just now:

   Right   Seagate   ST31500341AS   -   Pass [ 2010/06/22 20:31:45 ]
   Left   Seagate   ST31500341AS   -   Pass [ 2010/06/22 20:31:49 ]

The freezes are very frequent, occurring at least once every few minutes. I'm running the extended test, and will post again when it's completed.

Extended SMART test passed as well:

   Right   Seagate   ST31500341AS   -   Pass [ 2010/06/23 12:58:23 ]
   Left   Seagate   ST31500341AS   -   Pass [ 2010/06/23 12:55:19 ]

It's a mystery to me.
