Ooma VOIP behind DIR-655
« on: May 09, 2010, 06:47:33 PM »

I have an Ooma Telo VOIP device which works fine if I place it between the cable modem and the DIR-655 router. But the router is in a utility closet and I need to put the Ooma behind the router. When I hook it up that way it works fine for about four hours and then loses its connection to the network. Rebooting the router and the Ooma does no good. The only way to kick-start the Ooma again is to connect it via ethernet cable to my laptop and access its built-in home page. That seems to wake it up.

I have spent days over on the Ooma forums and we finally diagnosed it as something in the router that is cutting off the connection. They tell me that Ooma's SIP should be opaque to the router as it is tunneled over VPN, so the SIP detection in the router shouldn't have any effect on Ooma, though I did try turning SIP both on and off. I also tried setting the Ooma to use a static IP. It works with or without a static IP, but only for a few hours. The rest of my home network has run flawlessly for a couple of years without incident, and even when the Ooma disconnects the remaining computers and devices still work fine. In other words, only the Ooma is losing a connection.

The best guess by the Ooma forumites is that something is breaking the VPN connection back to Ooma. I need an "always on" connection. I'm using Comcast and they only allow DHCP, which does not allow me to set "always on". I suspect if I could, the problem might resolve itself.

Can anyone tell me how to set up the router so this doesn't happen? I really need this to work.

The router is currently running firmware version 1.21. If you need other info, let me know.
