Blocking SSL sites (like facebook) on the DGL-4500
« on: May 10, 2010, 02:31:29 PM »

Is this possible, when I use web filtering to block facebook it works, but my kid has found that if she simply adds the "s" for SSL facebook will work.

I used nslookup and blocked the 4 IPs it found, still no go, she can get on.  When I attempt to add an https site the router tells me it doesn't support this option.

Ideas?  Part of the reason I bought a decent router was for exactly this reason.

Nope, that is the issue, you can't add https to the filter.  I'm hoping a D-Link engineer will chime in on the topic...

Isn't that part of the point of the secure connection, hiding what you're doing from source to destination?  I hate facebook, but I hate censorship more!!!

When you have a 13 year old girl that is yours seeing things she shouldn't - you'll think a whole lot differently about censorship.

How about trying a 3rd party proxy SW application to block?

How about editing the HOSTS file on the computer instead?

Have you considered using OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/ ?

OpenDNS Basic is free and includes:

  • Reliable DNS Infrastructure
  • Web Content Filtering
  • Phishing Protection
  • Basic Customization
  • Typo Correction

Web Content Filtering
More than 50 categories of content. No appliance necessary. Effective against proxies, P2P, Web 2.0, adult and more.

Hope this helps,
Hank

Have you tried just denying "facebook.com" (without the quotes)? That should work according to the help section.
