DNS-323 FTP with Belkin Router F5D8235-4 - No Luck
« on: May 11, 2010, 06:16:11 PM »

I'm not having any success with setting up the FTP server with this router.
As for the DNS-323, here is what I have done:
I've setup the Static IP address to my internal network of 192.168.2.12 for this unit.  IP address, subnet mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, and secondary DNS have been confirmed.  I've setup a user that has access to the root of the drive & below.  FTP server is started & is using port 21.  Report external IP in Passive mode is not checked.  I do have e-mail alerts working (if that means anything - it tested OK).  I did setup an administrator password for the unit.  The unit is running firmware version 1.08.  There are two 2TB Western Digital drives in the bays.
As for the F5D8235-4, here is what I have done:
I've setup the Static IP address to my internal network of 192.168.2.1 for this unit.  IP address, subnet mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, and secondary DNS have been confirmed.  Firewall is enabled.  Virtual Server is set to inbound port of 21-21 (for the range), Type TCP, Private IP address of 192.168.2.12, and Private Port of 21-21 (for the range).  Access Control is disabled.  I don't have anything in the DMZ zone.  My DynDNS server is enabled with my login username at DynDNS.org, password for DynDNS.org, and the hostname I chose at DynDNS.org.  The unit is running firmware version 2.01.08.  The drive is connected to the router thru an Ethernet Switch.  I can ping both devices.  I can connect to the unit via ftp://192.168.2.12 (from within the home network), but when I type if ftp://hostname (from within the home network) - it doesn't work.  I did have someone try from outside my network, but he had no luck.  Am I missing something?  I did call Road Runner Internet service to verify Port 21 is not blocked (it isn't).  I can connect to my work ftp site from the home office.  I've tried the IP address of my router from the outside world (which of course will change) for the FTP site, but that didn't work either.

hi ronsecrist

what program are you using to access the FTP?
Internet explorer? ... try setting it to PORT mode (disable passive mode in options)

also try forwarding port 20-21 in both TCP and UDP to your DNS-323

when you ping "hostname" what it the IP addres you get? your external IP ? or something esle
try from within your network an from outside...

I've tried using both Windows Explorer & Internet Explorer.  I use either of those programs to access my work FTP site.
I reset my router to factory defaults and now I can get it to work from inside my network (via either the IP address or the dyndns address).  I used my cell phone tethered to my laptop to try access the FTP site (I had unplugged my Ethernet cable & turned off my wireless) - that didn't work (it could also be that the cell provider blocks port 20/21 - I didn't call to check).  I do have both TCP & UDP selected with ports 20-21 in the router.  I can ping both my internal IP address and the IP address assigned externally from my ISP.
I did have someone else try from outside my network & they couldn't get to the FTP site (via my dyndns address).

It might help to disable your router's firewall temporarily while you try and get it to work. When you ping your dyndns address from the outside do you get your external IP address?

I don't know anything about your router but with the routers I've used previously the area to configure this is usually called NAT/Open Ports or similar, rather than Virtual Server?

If you run ShieldsUp port scan does it show that port 21 is open or stealth?

Port forwarding options are the same as virtual server setup. Different manufacturers use different terms, but all perform the same functions.

Try putting the IP of the DNS323 into your DMZ if all else fails (just as a test, I wouldn't leave it that way)

did you modified the Internet Explorer option to use PORT mode instead of Passive ?

by default IE uses Passive mode... and since you are not redirecting the passive ports also, you need to force IE to user PORT mode

or use a free FTP application like FileZilla, and set it to port mode

if you want to use PAssive mode, you will need to forward the port range thats in the DNS-323 to you DNS, and enable the "Report external IP" and make sure that the boxes contains your external IP address.
