Slow WAN speeds
« on: May 12, 2010, 03:43:32 PM »

Hi,

I've owned my DIR-655 for about 2 years.  Everything has been great until just a few weeks ago.  Now, I'm suddenly experiencing very very very slow internet speeds when connected through my DIR-655.  And to make it weirder, it's only happening during specific times of the day (around 4pm - 5am the next day).  Outside of these times, my connection speed is always very quick (~30mbps down), but during these times it drops to less than 1mbps!

I at first suspected the issue was with my service provider.  They came out and checked all their hardware and lines and found it all to be normal.

Power-cycling the modem OR the router brings my internet speeds back up to where they should be, but it's a very temporary fix and they end up dropping back down within 1-2 minutes.  After hooking up my modem directly to the computer I noticed that there are no drops in speeds, so the issue must be with the router.

Until yesterday, I was running a very old version of the firmware (1.11 I believe).  I noticed that in 1.20 one of the reported fixes is a WAN speed issue.  I went and upgraded the firmware and thought it solved the problem, but as I discovered today it most definitely did not.

Transferring files over the network (both wired and wireless) is still very quick, the only issue is with the internet.  Any ideas?

Internet over Wired LAN has same issues? Or is it only wireless giving problems?

Hi nimbus510,

I have had the same problem you are having. Except, I learned what the problem is, by having the Router Logs Emailed to me when they are full. And I was receiving the logs almost daily. I was having someone trying to hack into my Wireless Network from the outside.

I simply changed the SSID Signal Name. The problem went away. I kept the same Pass Key phase.

Wired and wireless both slow down.

Hmm...I'll give that a shot when I get home.

This didn't fix it.  The issue now seems to be happening at random during the day as well.  It seems like it's just been slowly getting worse and worse.

I have the same problem, the router shows that it has gotten an IP from the modem.
But when i try to surf it's very slow and the webpages doesnt load correctly.
Tried Resetting the router several times, mayby i need to reset it with the button?

Any one have any suggestion how to fix this.

Had problem with blocked icmp 3 messages before, and suspected that i had a spyware on my comp.
But i have reinstalled it now, and the logs stopped. But still crappy WAN.

I will try and connect the modem directly to the computer and see if it helps.
Have trouble getting an IP to the computer directly thou.

And this problem has gotten worse over a period of one month now.
