extremely weird problem
« on: May 12, 2010, 03:53:03 PM »

since a year ago i updated to DIR-615, but i always used wired connection for my home PCs because wireless problems, friends who came to my house had various wireless problems but it didnt bother me because personally I didnt need to use the wireless connection.
I just purchased a new laptop and the problem got even more strange. Here is a summary:

All my machines connect to the internet fine when directly plugged into the cable modem.
*shows my ISP is not at fault*
All my friends machines work fine in other wireless locations such as school, library.
My laptops works fine in other wireless locations such as school, library.
*shows nothings wrong with my laptops*
All the USB receivers I tried work fine in public wireless networks such as school, library.
*shows nothings wrong with USB receivers*
All my desktops when WIRED connected to the router, connect to the internet just fine.
When i did these connection tests all firewalls are off, and my router setting is on default(i pressed reset to factory default button)

Same Desktops with usb wireless connection(tried about 4, tested one at a time) even 2 feet away from my router is extremely unstable, getting cut every 10 seconds. Not exaggerating.
*So from here it is logical to assume my router is fked up*

Laptop(Win 7, brandnew lenovo) --------> (wired OR wireless connects to the router, can ONLY ping my router fine) Router --------->(fail to connect to the internet or ping ANY site!!, DNS problem message showing after clicking the red cross between my router and the internet under the window Network and Sharing center) internet
*however with the SAME cat5 cable plugged into my desktop, they connect to the internet immediately. and this step shows something on the router is blocking the connection of my lenovo to the internet*

Another laptop(5 years old SONY) and my cellphone connects to the internet through the router just fine, cellphone is a blackberry, the SONY is WIN XP, and so far this is the ONLY PC that could connect to the internet without a problem(out of so many that i tried).
*here it shows nothings wrong with my router, and dlink tech support on the phone keeps repeating this to ignore my problem and blaming on lenovo and rogers*

So i called in, talked for hours with lenovo, dlink, and Rogers(my isp), dlink kept blaming lenovo, and lenovo told me to call rogers, and rogers blamed dlink.....

with my intuition and hours of testing, trying different usb receivers everywhere, I can feel it is definitely my router's fault because when comparing the problems that lenovo, dlink, and rogers gave me, dlink's problem far exceeds both of the others combined.

Conclusion is contradicting at every step of isolation here... can someone help me to pin down the problem??

strangely my lenovo now connects to the router wirelessly after I unplugged the 4-port D-link switch which was connected to the router.
The router and modem and everything else(my desktops and laptops) is on my first floor and the cat5 cable leads to my basement which connects to my switch. No computers were connected to the switch for a while now, it was just there as a back up as whenever i wanna play games with my friends at basement I can do so by hooking up wired connection.

Is there an explanation for this?
