DNS 323 - very slow transfer speeds
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:10:40 AM »

Hi everyone - please help

I've got a 2TB WD hard drive in my new 323 which is plugged into my router. I access my router on my PC through 85mb home plugs. So how come I can only get 1.5-2mbs transfer speeds when copying files across to my 323??? (read and write)

So then i thought I'd use the share port and by pass the home plugs which I though might be causing the problem. This time i'm getting 0.9mbs!!!! I've got over 1.5TB to transfer and its going to take ages at this speed.

I was expecting around the 30-40mbs (same speed as my external hard drive to pc) when i bought the NAS so this makes me think im doing something wrong with my set up. People are saying that they can get 10-15mbs which I'd kill for at the minute but is still well below the advertised "high performance with Gigabit connectivity"

Any advise on how I can increase my speeds would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Roller.

Check one of the many existing threads such as this one http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11263.0

What drives do you have? Drives with AFT are not supported and can run slow http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=12977.0

The default out-of-the-box settings result in very slow transfer speeds.  You have to dig deep to tweak many network settings to optimise the speed from the NAS to the switch to the PC.  Which is rather lame imho.

Not a lot you can do here unless you're willing to dig deep, tweak a LOT of settings, spend hours upon hours testing things to squeeze out an extra 1-2MB/s of speed.  It's kind of ridiculous.

Thanks for the reply's. I am aware of the other threads but they did give a direct answer.

My hard drive is WD caviar green WD20EARS 2TB set up in standard mode. This might be stupid of me but what do you mean by the 'switch'?

Dam, didn't see that thread on how s**t WD hard drives are in NAS before I bought it.

I was also planning to upgrade my WD HD media player to the Live version which networks, but will these slow speed affect playing HD films????

Thanks

I access my router on my PC through 85mb home plugs.

Personally, I'd be looking at the link speed through these, I'll bet that's part of the problem. ;)
