Blocking ports or restricting bandwidth
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:21:54 PM »

Hi,
I am letting my room mate have wireless access to my internet connection through my DIR 655 for free.  The only problem is, he downloads like mad and it's killing my internet speeds now.

Is there a way to limit bandwidth to a specific computer?  Or to limit bandwidth over the wireless (since my computer is wired)?

I already tried blocking the ports needed for bittorrent, which is what he's constantly using, but it had no effect.

Just tell him to stop or you will cut him off.

You could block internet access for him... But alas, no, no easy way to limit bandwidth.
What you -COULD- do is lower the radio transmission power to a measly 10%, resulting in a lot of lost packets, discouraging high volume usage...
Or let him buy his own 3G stick and change your SSID/WPA2 password.

You could probably throttle him using the QOS Engine. Look at the status page and find his ip and mac. Set a static ip for his mac address and then add some QOS rules for his mac address. Set his priority/traffic rules to 255 which is the lowest and maybe that will help. However if hes smart he could change his mac on you. lol

That is a good notion, but I always thought that QoS settings were only positive enhancements... If, by setting a very low priority to the one IP, you can enforce that, you will also need to set an 'anybody else' rule. Don't you?

I dont think an "anybody else" rule is neccessary as it would be handled normally. I would also add, that he should add his mac to the QOS rule set to give his computer top priority. ;D
