How do I properly set up the media server on the DNS-323 for my PS3?

I enabled the server on the NAS. I added both the profile name and the PS3 name to the users list. Normally the rest of the drive required a password when connected to my PC. AFAIK the media server does not require a password which is fine. The problem is that the PS3 says I cannot access the media server because the name may not be registered in the NAS.

Also, when trying to access the NAS I often get 2 messages. One is that a DLNA error has occured. The second is that the PS3 has been disconnected from the media server.

Any advice?

I don't know much about connectivity to PS3, but is this a wired or wireless connection? UPnP also doesn't require users/groups setup on the NAS, I believe. Which firmware version are you running on the NAS? Have you ever managed to get it working? Have you tried accessing the UPnP media server from Windows Media Player or similar?

It's a wireless connection to the PS3. It's wired to my computer. I have never disconnected from wireless in the past.

Now that I check it, windows media player says "the remote media library did not allow the connection".

I didn't think it was an issue on my pc before because I manually added network folders in windows media center.

It gives a similar message from the PS3. If I solved why it doesn't allow the connection on the PC it might solve the issue on the PS3...

Using firmware 1.08

Try a factory reset of the DNS-323 and reboot it? Not sure why it would reject the connection.

The DNS-323 does not work as a Media Library with Windows MediaPlayer 11 or 12

Hmm interesting. Is there any program on the PC that you know would support it? I'd like to make sure that it works on the PC first so then I can know if it might be the PS3 or the NAS with the issue.

Mediatomb works for PS3 (not sure about WMP), but you will need ffp installed

So from what I see they only offer binaries for linux. Although it will be great for my ubuntu install, what will I do with windows?

I would prefer to get the DNS-323 working though so I don't have to have a pc running. Most of my media is not on my PC anyways.

Also, what is ffp?

Fonz Fun Plug. Third party add-on software. Unsupported here. Google is your friend :)

Not sure why you're having issues with the upnp media server, my Xbox discovered it and was streaming stuff happily...

AFAIK the ps3 name goes something like: PS3-000 where the 0's are any number. I looked in the ps3 settings and copied the name into the users page on the dns-323.

did you have to enter a password for your 360 in either the 360 or the dns-323 for the user?

For the DNS-323 setup all you need to do is simply enable the UPnP AV media server. After doing this I would recommend doing an manual refresh of the server clicking the button on the same screen. Make sure the PS3 and DNS-323 have the latest firmware update and there should be no problems. If your PS3 is connected wireless try a wired connection and see if you run into the same issue.

I just tried that and it still does not work. Is there any free windows based program that I can use to see if the media server shows up and is accessible?

The only half-solution I have been using for now is using tversity and adding the folders manually to it's library. I'd still like to get the media server working properly though so I can turn my computer off!

The only other thing that comes to mind is DLNA. It does say that a DLNA error has occured when I try to connect directly.

If I connect with TVersity(which I know is DLNA compliant) it connects first to the computer and then from there to the PS3.

Is the DNS-323 DLNA compliant?
