DIR-825 cable performance problem
« on: May 18, 2010, 03:47:32 AM »

Hello,

I have a DIR-825 router and a 60Mbit cable net. I have problem with the wired transfer speed. I use 2-3m Cat6 cables.

The ftp download works fine and I can download with 60Mbit and ping also works fine without packet loss.
The torrent download speed is ~ 30-35Mbit but in this case ping reports 50% packet loss.
The http test sites like speedtest.net reports only 6(!)Mbit maximum download speed.

I have already updated the firmware, reset to factory defaults and also changed the router itself for a new one but no difference.

However when I use my network without the DLink router or use an other router (other brand) then no problem with the download speeds.

Any idea what can I check?

I have found the problem!

Downgraded to the oldest firmaware (2.00EU) and it works fine!

I have found another fix for this problem which seems to be working with hardware B1, firmware 2.01EU. The symptoms are pretty much the same as with MicroSun. I have recently switched to a 40M/2M cable connection and there is a cable modem in bridged mode between Internet and DIR-825. I realized that the network speed was not what it should be when connecting through DIR-825 (speed was about 5-25M/2M). There were no problems when using Internet by connecting directly to the cable modem.

I pretty much tried all possible tricks and finally found something which fixed it for me: I went to Advanced --> Advanced Network and set WAN Port Speed to 100Mbps. Using auto or 1000Mbps made the problem persist but for some reason 100Mbps seems to be working - I hope that you with the problem do not have over 100Mbps connections.  ???  ???  ???

I hope this hint helps at least some of you. I must say that I am really unhappy with DIR-825. Quality and price definitely do not match with this product! I am also very sad that whatever the problem is, users have to figure out the fixes by themselves. Update to even worse firmware which usually does not fix the problem, power-off and resetting seem to be the only commonly given official instructions. I have spent an awful lot of time trying to figure out all kinds of problems both with DIR-825 and DWA-160. Resetting and reconfiguring seems to be the common way to go with DIR-825.

Only way i could see that setting causing problems is if your using a CAT6 cable to connect your Modem to the Router. As most Modems only have a 100Mbps Port on them. It could then be causing a conflict with the Router Auto Detecting the connection as 1000Mbps as the cable supports that speed, or more so if you set it to 1000Mbps manually. When the Modem only supports 100Mbps.

Which i could see such a conflict causing a drop in upload and download speeds, as the router would then send data to the Modem at speeds over the 100Mbps that the Port on the Modem can handle. Causing packets to be lost between the Router and Modem.

Manually setting the WAN Port to 100Mbps would then solve the conflict and stop the packet loss. Also using a CAT5e Cable instead to connect the Modem to the Router would also likely solve the issues.

Hello,

I had same problem with DIR-825 and cable modem Cisco epc3212. Maximum wan speed around 30mbps. I solved problem by upgrading firmware to the latest 2.02EU and set wan port speed to 1000mbps manually.

Latest firmware link:
ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dir/dir-825/driver_software/DIR-825_fw_revb_202EUb04_ALL_multi_20100212.zip

Now download works fine about 110mbps and upload about 10mbps.
