Modem question/help with DGL-4500
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:04:16 AM »

I have just set up my DGL-4500 thanks to the help of the sticky by FuzzyNutz but still have tons of lag when my GF and I host a match on Gears of War.  I am wondering if it is the modem that is now boggind us down.  I have a motorola surfboard that is around 4 or 5 years old and Insight RoadRunner internet with powerboost.  Any suggestions as to a good modem, if that is even the issue?  Also, any other tips for settings for the DGL-4500 for running 2 360's at the same time?  Thank you very much.

I would recommend checking with your ISP to see if the have a posted listing of tested or certified modems that they will support on there networks 1st.

The listing might look like mine as an example:
http://help.cableone.net/HSD/Modem/Certified.aspx

One thing you could try is to barrow or just purchase a new modem and do a trial run as well.

What happens when you turn off Gamefuel and go back to default settings?

How does it work on one computer thats plugged right into the modem?  I have the SB6120, it's really fast if your ISP supports channel bonding, I got a huge speed boost without having to even upgrade service.

6120 FTW

I am trying to pull some strings and get a 6180. Absolutly no advantages what so ever over the 6120 on my ISP...but darn it I would have the only one in my state! Hehe

I guess I should reply as well.

When it comes to cable broadband, so many of the problems stem from signal issue. The great thing about motorola modems (as compared to SA/Cisco) is it gives you alot of data on such things.

Start > Run > http://192.168.100.1 > Click on Signal

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5862

Theres probably better FAQ out there, buts thats just the first google hit. Your TX is your number one culprit.  Try to get it below 50. Forever splitter you get rid of you improve it by 3.5dh.  Also though,  you have to look at your service agreement. You really should have above 3Mb down and 1MB up for online gaming. 5 down and 2up is even better. However, I have 75-100Mb down and 8Mb up, and friends have 55 Mb down and 30Mb Up, and we still get lag. When were talking about online gaming, theres so many factors its mind boggling, and alot of them are outside your control.

Yes and no. Not going to be for residential use. Has 8 and 4 channels instead of the 4 and 4 on the 6120. Also it has two separate tuners on the DS. Total overkill...but thats why I want it.

Hey,

I was wondering I also want to get my hands on the Motorola SB6120, But I do not believe my Isp fully supports it as in they have it listed on the site i don't even know how to locate the one they support but anyways.... I have seen some reviews of Optimum online users using this modem and it has been very good so... Is it a good choice to buy it? They do support older version such as  Motorola SBV4200,SBV5120 but I want the new ones. What if they do not support the modem? does that mean it will not work? Thank you guys for the reply's.

I think this thread is getting off the topic of the DGL 4500, but in short it should work since its DOCSIS 2.0 compliant as well, which is what the SB5160 is (I think). But there's no point to having fancy new technology if it doesn't work with your ISP!!!

Well the topic is about modem and help with Dgl500 so i do not believe we are getting off topic -_-. & yes my Isp uses docs 2.0 and 3.0 :) My Isp Uses the Sb5160 But the version with Voip As shown in this link http://tinyurl.com/395tfoj am going to call my Isp and ask them if they could switch my modem. When I first became a customer to them i had a lot of modem issues and it took me about 4 modem replacement to get me one that worked -_- So i am going to call and say your modem is still crap get me this one :) So i guess they do support these modems.

Modems aren't s***. If you went through 5 I would say the s*** was the bull s*** those techs were throwing yourway by replacing it. The vast majority of connectivity issues is not hardware, but signal levels going into the modem.

Generally though, I would suggest getting separate phone modem and data modem for a number of reasons. First, it makes troubleshooting easier. Second, it allows you to put the MTA closer to the punch block(IE basement). Third, I find that the firmware of those units are sketchy. They are always patching them.  And last, you get to keep a data modem, you have to return a hybrid. Just compare a SB5101 with a SB5220.

As for the worth of a DOCSIS 3 modem outside a Ultimate package, it depends on your area. Try calling your ISP and seeing how many customers are on your node. Or look at the forced idle on your QoS handle. If both of those are good. (Under 400 usually and under 50%) then a upgrade may be worth it. If their squashing their traffic or if your area is under strain, your probably not going to see much of a improvement.

Last if your going to DOCSIS 3, I highly suggest making sure your signal levels are perfect. RX 0-2, TX 46-48, DS SNR 36+. I found the modem naturally gave RX levels 2-3 above previous. Just FYI
