All Printer Functions Slowed by DIR655
« on: May 23, 2010, 09:54:59 PM »

I recently was given a DIR-655 by a friend, and replaced my Buffalo router.

I have two wired computers and two wireless computers on my network at any given time.  One wired computer has my two printers hooked to it (one Epson Inkjet, one HP Laserjet), the other wired computer is my main desktop.  I have a simple Windows network setup where the two printers are shared, and I'm able to print with ANY computer on the network.

That was until I installed the D-Link DIR-655.  Now any function involving the printer (even something like a right-click on a printer icon for "properties") takes several minutes on any computer except for the one that the two printers are hooked directly too.  It was never like this with the Buffalo router.  Even hitting file--->print in Word or Photoshop takes several minutes before I even get the dialog to pick a printer!  I tried deleting the two printers from my main desktop (which is wired into the router directly) and re-adding them.  Deleting took 2 minutes each, re-adding took almost 5 minutes each before it finally popped up and asked me if I wanted thsi printer to be my default printer.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?  I noticed via google and searching these forums that slow printing seems to go hand in hand with this router.  I'm NOT using the router's USB port, I'm just trying to print to a shared printer on my network as I always have.  I might give that thing a try if nothing else works, but I'd prefer to leave things as they were.

The firmware is version 1.21.

maybe the dir has UPnP on or off....

are you using wireless encryption ?  not that it should matter for what you are seeing....

Thanks for the response.  I double-checked the UPnP setting...it was enabled.

It would seem strange if the encryption merely slowed the printer stuff down rather than it not working at all.

Thanks again for responding...

Hi,

Am trying to think of any settings that might help your situation...

Also check the WLAN Partition setting....I have mine unchecked.  WMM checked.

I also have QoS totally turned off.  I have DNS Relay enabled.  I have G & N only for wireless.  I have channel width set to Auto-20/40.

I also use OpenDNS for my internet DNS, altho that should really have zero impact oon your stuff....

Hi Trogdorr,

I own a D-Link DIR-655 A3 Router with Firmware 1.21 I have absolutely no problems with printing to my printer.

My Printer is a Wireless Printer, A Lexmark X6570. I have its Printer Software installed on each operating system.

You had said that you replaced a Router when you got this Router.

I believe that you need to uninstall and reinstall your printer software.

You don't mention your operating systems or Firewalls installed on each computer.

The two wired computers are a Vista 64 system and an 32bit XP Pro system.  The main wireless computer is a Vista 64 system.  There is a fourth computer that connects to the network wirelessly that used to be able to print as well, it's 32bit XP Pro too.  All computers are using the Windows Firewall.  File/Print sharing is enabled.  The wired XP system is connected to the two printers via USB 2.0 and the printers are shared.  On all computers NOT attached to the printers, when I click "Add Printer" and browse the network, the two printers appear.  When I add the printer, it takes several minutes for the dialogue to complete and say that the printer is added.  When I actually try to use the printer, either printing something, or even right-clicking the icon to click "properties" it takes several minutes for the operation to continue.  The fact that the operations actually *will* complete eventually makes me doubt that it's a firewall issue, and because of the fact that it all worked before, I don't think that it's a OS issue.

The drivers exist on the various network computers for each printer.  I might try uninstalling the printer on the computer they're connected to and all of the others on the network...then re-installing there, then re-adding them to the network.  If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what else to try other than the router's USB port.

Thanks for the response...

Hi TD,

It might be an operating system issue. An operating system issue from the standpoint of changes done by the Hotfixes for the operating systems themselves. It could be that the Router changed the IP Address of the computer you plug the printers into.

Do a Factory Reset on the Router by the Button in the Back of the Router. Manually reenter all changes, especially for the Wireless Side. Also, make sure that you assign a Static IP Address for the Computer that has the printers plugged into that computer.

I have this router with 2 XP's and a Vista machine on a home wired network. The slowest machine to print is the Vista, and it will not print via the printer icon, only by using a File/print route. Rarely it will print something very slowly and I have never figured out why, it's and HP network printer Officejet 8500. I'm using 1.21, and am considering updating the firmware, but afraid to disable the device, because of other reported problems with firmware updates.
Hope this helps a bit.
