Local Loopback on DIR-615
« on: May 26, 2010, 07:04:27 AM »

Could you please let me know if it's possible to get local loopback working on the above router?

Also, I thought maybe the option would have been added in a firmware update, but the D-Link site only gives me firmware updates for hardware revisions B2 or D1, but mine is a D2 which isn't listed  ???  It was a Virgin Media special.

!!!!!USE THE INFORMATION BELOW AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!

The latest version I could find for your D2 from Virgin Media is v1.00VG_B02

Binary:  http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/temp/PMD/4282/DIR615_v1.00VG_B02.bin
Release notes:  http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/temp/PMD/4282/DIR-615%20v1.00VG%20Release%20Note.pdf

Another option would be to install the 4.11 firmware for all D revisions. Get it from here ftp://ftp.dlink.biz/dir/dir-615/driver_software/DIR-615_fw_revd_411DEb15_ALL_de_20100303.zip. Unpack and DIR-615D_FW411EUB15.bin is the file you want.

Third and final option would be to install a custom firmware like DD-WRT. Go to http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database type DIR-615 and get the build for D2. The installation instructions are the same as for DIR-600 and are available at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DIR-600#Installation_Instructions

You could also try the latest dev build for DIR-615 Dx from: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/05-25-10-r14573/dlink-dir615d/

PS: Fortunately if you mess it up, restoring the factory firmware on this model is dead simple. Follow the instructions here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DIR-600#Alternate_Install_Method_using_Emergency_Room_Web_Interface and use the http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/temp/PMD/4282/DIR615_v1.00VG_B02.bin

EDIT: nvmnd, I used the very last option you mentioned, and now I only need to get a grab about the actual settings :P
thanks a lot, cheers!

@Skello: Has your post been meant as a guide in getting latest FW version or as a guide in getting NAT-loopback to DIR-615? To clarify: I believe I have the latest available version for my router (4.11 - 2009-03-02), so I'm dying to know whether there's a chance that by installing the 'all-D-versions' FW I could get local loopback...?
Unfortunately I have D1 version which, what a surprise, is not supported by dd-wrt.com.

Unfortunately I have D1 version which, what a surprise, is not supported by dd-wrt.com.

I have a DIR-615 D1 with the latest BrainSlayer DD-WRT build (r14573) for Dx. Flashed it from emergency room just to make sure, but it might also work from the D-Link web interface. Worked flawlessly so far. The only issue is with the reboot button on the side of the router which stays lit red all the time. I disabled the reboot button from DD-WRT settings, it went off temporarily, but then lit up again later.

As far as settings go, I found it best not to mess with any I don't fully understand :) Of course set the wireless security and the basic stuff, but for the rest default values seem to work fine. If you want the 300 Mbps capability, change Channel Width under Wireless Basic Settings to 40 MHz instead of 20. Note that most, but NOT all adapters support it though.

Good luck.

@Skello: I used the mentioned FW and the router has been working fine since then. (With the red LED lit, but I don't care about that as the router is in another room.) No need to mess with anything, the loopback has been also set properly!
But I'm passing the router to buddy anyways. When buying it I did not knew what should I be careful about.

Thanks again!

Anytime.

When I bought mine, I looked for an affordable one that specifically works with DD-WRT. I wanted DD-WRT on it because it's so much better stability- and feature-wise than the default firmware on many routers, including more expensive ones like Linksys or Netgear.

Unfortunately, in Europe only D1 and D3 revisions are sold as retail DIR. D2 and D4 are made specifically for ISPs like Virgin Media, who then give them to their customers. I can live with my D1 though.

My point is that with these home routers it's not the hardware that's faulty or problematic most of the time, but the factory firmware. With this in mind you might want to keep your DIR-615 D1 with DD-WRT, or get another model officially supported by DD-WRT, as regardless of what brand you buy, the firmware might give you headaches.

I haven't decided yet, but I'm afraid 3rd party fw collides with warranty.

Well, technically yes, installing a 3rd party firmware voids the warranty. But in practice I doubt it has any significance.

For example, let's suppose that something malfunctions, but the router still boots up. Then you can flash back the original firmware and send it under warranty. I highly doubt there's anything that can alert the service staff that you ran a different firmware. And even if there was, the staff handling warranty claims at retailers don't do in-depth analysis. They perform basic checks to confirm the defect you reported and replace the device. The faulty one will then be sent further up the chain to the distributor and eventually manufacturer.

If the device fails completely, doesn't boot up anymore and is stuck with the 3rd party firmware installed, the same logic applies. The guys at the store will see it doesn't start anymore, replace it and send it to their distributor. It will eventually be destroyed or something. I doubt anyone will try to fix it and replace components inside just to see what you had on it. It's acceptable losses to them. Fits within the margin of returns.

This is just my opinion though. I might be wrong.

Local loopback option has been DISABLED in all DLINK official firmwares as a security measure. And I doubt putting DDWRT fw will fix this. Is hardware related. You can't ping the router from a local LAN ip or access the web administration webpage. You can only do this from an external IP.

kukubau

I spent quite a lot of time looking for a way around this.  and decided that installing DD-WRT may actually work.  I hate to correct ppl on forums but afraid kukubau you where incorrect.  after I've installed DD-WRT and re-setup ips / wan etc.   I tested local loopback and it works just fine.   Thanks for the guys that hinted towards this.. and I hope this helps anyone else with this issue.
