DGL-4500's low speed
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:01:45 PM »

When my modem connected to computer.  The speed of download showed 20 Mbps.  When my modem connected to router then to computer and now the speed of download showed 1.5 Mbps.  I use Speakeasy. net and Speedtest.net to find what speed do I get.  What is problem?  How to solve it?  Can you help me?

Thank you
Janice

What FW is currently loaded. What ISP service do you use? DSL, Cable or Wireless? What ISP modem do you have?

i had this same exact problem. the problem lies with 1 or 2 things. #1, disable Automatic Uplink Speed on the Advanced--Gamefuel tab.  set the manual uplink speed to its max setting (2048) or type in your own if its higher.  if that works, great. if not, disable Enable Advanced DNS Service on the Basic--Internet--Manual Configure tab.  hope this helps! i know it did for me.

Is this a wired connection on the connection through the router? Or wireless? You didnt actually say.

Hambone, I know you mean well, but his problem is download speed. Probably based on a capacity test. Automatic upload wouldnt effect download, and DNS wouldnt effect capacity(Only the possible speed of browsing). Normally I wouldnt say something about someone else idea, because I know your just trying to help, but you have pasted the same thing to just about every problem on this board. If it worked for your problem, great, just be careful that your not sending people on wild goose chases.

For the OP, is it exactly 1.5? Or is it around there? Does it go straight to 1.5 or go above and slowly drop back down? Do you see a decrease in actual site to site?

Cable, Using FW 1.15, since 1.22 was giving me issues throughout my network. Only Config i've done was set the wireless security and reserving IP's.

I have a much more long-winded post at http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13794.0 but my issue is technically the same.

I get crappy DL speeds all of a sudden with my 4500 (and a whole slew of other devices) in the mix, but beautiful without.

F/W 1.22NA final, and I'll add this to my post there as well.

I was thinking that it might have to do with the fact that I have my setup so weirdly arranged, but in fact, I suppose it could just as easily be an issue I read about with other D-Link devices not playing nicely with the new DOCSIS 3 being rolled out on Cox.net connections (who just happens to be my subscriber, as well...)

I am having the same issue as the original poster, Janice. Very poor slow dowload and up load. I updated to the latest FW today thinking it mayhelp but didnt.  I run the speak easy test and it barely cracks 5mb. I can bypass directly to modem and it its usual 20+mbs. It had been working fine for the last six months I have had this so its been odd that it just showed up with no changes made to the system. Any ideas would be helpfulI am begining to think the router has gone bad.

What ISP do you have? DSL or Cable? How are you connecting to the PC? Wired or Wireless? Review the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky for additional info. IT works well. Yes it could be a unit going bad. Have you called DLink yet? Have you tried a Factory Reset? Let us know.

It also helps to try those tests at different times of the day, if your connection is dependent on what others in your branch (neighborhood) are doing, that may be part of the reason.  Try it at 4am (past the late night gamers, before the early birds) if you can for a good test.  Or just see if its ever different at different times of the day.

Same exact problem I have been having for the past month!  Seems to usually only be an issue with the wireless.  I have both a laptop and desktop with wireless connecting to the DGL-4500(f/w 1.15).  I also have and xbox wired and PS3 wireless.
All utilities on my desktop show a strong signal, but upload and download speeds start to tank or drop altogether.  If I connect my computer to one of the wired ports on the back of the 4500, 9 times out of 10 the download speeds go back to normal(20+Mbps).  Usually happens in the evenings and on weekends so thought it was a congestion thing, but Comcast keeps telling me that all levels look normal to the modem and to the neighborhood node.  I thought it could be a wireless interference thing too, but when I run inSSIDer I only have one network show up with weak signal.
