Wireless Router Help???
« on: May 28, 2010, 05:20:09 PM »

I need to get a new wireless router and i've had a couple of people tell me to get this one for what i would use it for. I just wanted to double check and see if there is something else anyone would suggest before i buy this specific model. Here is what i need it for:
My house is 2200sf and I will be using it for getting online and playing games online with my PS3, XBOX 360, streaming HD content using Netflix (so i need something thats has an excellent connection i suppose), and getting online with my Laptop (which i would like to use it outside if possible. So with this said, is this the one i should get even though its not dual band, is 4 years old since it debuted in 2006, etc.
Any suggestions/comments will help.
Thanks

Mine has been working just fine since October 2007.  No problem with any of the firmwares.  You can try a 655 if you want, if you have issues come back here and we can try and sort them out.  If you are worried about it not working check the return policy of the place you buy it from befroe puchasing.  You may want a dual band one to make you more Future-Proof.

I just want to make sure i have excellent signal quality all over my house. Will this one do that?

Hi,

Please check out smallnetbuilder. The dir 655 is about three years old so in terms of performance there are many other better routers. Plus dualband routers don't cost that much extra. You may want to look into routers that provide alternative firmware (open source).

From personal experience - there are a lot of known issues with this product. Just browse the forums and you will get an idea of the problems you may or may not come across. Dlink are still releasing firmware updates that are addressing these issues 3 years on. Unfortunately, these are the facts but depending on your setup it might be ok for you.

I would say look elsewhere - and suggest a more recent router.

Cheerz.

Hi,

Also might consider looking at Powerline Networking devices (HomePlug) as a way to extend wired ethernet without dealing with wireless issues, altho HomePlug can be a bit pricier, they can do the job nicely and the newest ones are near 300 Mbps between nodes....  I use older versions here that only run at 10 Mbps which is fine for devices like XBox360 and such, at least as far as internet connections go.

If you go wireless, you would do yourself well to convert everything to .11N wireless and not mix unless you have no other choice....  The only .11G devices here are ipod touch's and my HTC Pure fone...
