Dropped connections, firmware version inaccurate
« on: May 29, 2010, 11:00:59 PM »

My dir655 is all of a sudden constantly dropping connections, both wired and wireless. I has been running the 1.32NA firmware since it was released with no problems at all. When these problems started I downloaded and installed the 1.34NA firmware using the web based tool.

After going through the update process, the router still says it's running 1.32NA, and a check for updates says it's running the most up to date firmware.

I'm becoming very disappointed with D-Link, the firmware updates and support seems to have been going straight downhill. From removing features to poor performance.

Is this a known problem? Is there a fix on the way? Shall I start shopping for new hardware?

UPDATE
To solve the inaccurate version number:
1. Save your configuration settings
2. Reset router by pushing the reset button and holding until lights flash
3. Update firmware using web based updater
4. Reload config file

I am experiencing the same problems.  Wireless disconnects, and firmware reported by router does not match firmware uploaded - appears stuck at 1.32NA.

Push the reset button on the back of the router and hold it in until all the lights flash.

After reset, wait until the router fully initializes then flash the firmware again.

Yep - thanks for the reply - found same advice on the forum in other threads.  Firmware accurate now.  Will keep testing now.

Nice, thanks for the reset tip.

The router is reporting 1.34NA now.

IMPORTANT:
For others that stumble upon this thread, remember to save your configuration BEFORE doing the reset, as it will clear all your settings. Once you have the new firmware loaded, just load your config file and you're back to normal.

Hopefully the new firmware will have better stability... it was getting pretty bad before.

My uprade went fine but I noticed that the v1.32NA had previously showed as latest when I did the CHECK NOW....when I went to DLink FTP there was v1.33 and v1.34...but the v1.34 was named dir655A4_FW134NAb03.bin.  I guess the "b03" meant Beta Build 3.  I already upgraded so little late to ask but is this "b03" stable for use ?

Since I'm a newb (just bought the DIR-655 today after my Linksys WRT54G bricked), was wondering how everyone likes this DIR-655 ?....seems like some frustration above on stability ?...I've still have 29 days to return to FRYS. :)

Lastly, I thought about sending periodic Sys Log e:mails to my work PC to keep eye on this home router but my question really is that one of the options infers "When Full".  Can the Sys Log get full where no more entries will be made or will it purge oldest data and keep adding ?

Thx.

I've had mine for a while, with very few issues until recently:

1. I didn't like how the bridge feature was removed at one point via firmware upgrades. I went to use it and it was gone, did some searches and found out DLink decided to remove it so they could sell bridge specific hardware. New features being added is never expected, but removing functionality is just wrong on the part of a manufacturer in my opinion.

2. Recent stability issues. Within the last month or so I've had wireless connections drop out for no reason, requiring reboots to the router.

3. Last summer I was getting slow WAN speeds, inconsistent connections, and just a lot of weird things happening. I had the router stacked on top of a DLink 8 Port gigabit switch and it was really warm. I switched to using the little stand keeping the router vertical and the problems instantly went away and haven't returned. I'd recommend keeping the DIR 655 vertical, and with room around it for some air to circulate because it does run a little warm.

4. Wake on Lan is just strange on all DLink routers. I don't do a lot of this, and if I did, I would get another brand router because of the strange things you have to do for it to work with a DLink.

The log can get full (it'll be pretty big though), at which point the oldest entries are dropped to make room. I've never bothered with email notifications, as I don't think you can set it up to notify when there's a problem with something, only on a schedule or when the log is full. You can view the log by logging into the web config anyway.

Overall it's been pretty solid though. When I bought it, there weren't a lot of options for gigabit lan ports and wireless N, even less that weren't priced in outer space.

If I were to buy a router today, I would look for a dual band setup, just for more flexibility. I would probably also look for one that was well supported by DD-WRT or another aftermarket firmware. The features just can't be beat going that route.

It is still there if you view the page without a style.

Hmm... cool it's still there, too bad they don't just include it like it used to be...  ::)

The 1.34NA firmware is not any better.

I'm dumping this thing, it's gotten worse and worse with firmware updates... I guess the good DLink days are over...
