I've ran into a similar issue last week. It wasn't the 323 but the settings on my mail server that caused the issue. as I discovered by checking the mail server logs.

To the OP, any chance you can get a look at the mail server logs to see why the connect failed? It will probably go a long way into pointing you in the right direction.
