SharePort works only when it feels like it
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:21:26 PM »

router: DIR-655 (very new), H/W ver. A4, firmware 1.33NA
desktop: Windows XP SP3
laptop: Windows Vista Home Premium
SharePort 3.0.0 R1 (SXUPTP Driver : 3.3.8.0)
CANON MF4150 multifunction printer

I've gotten SharePort to work with my printer.....except that it only works when it wants to.  After trying to think logically about what's happening (or isn't), the most I've been able to figure out is that for whatever reason SP fails to load the printer drivers when I connect.  I can always tell at this point whether or not SP is going to work because if I hear the Window two-beat sound that new drivers are being "installed" or loaded up or whatever, then all is fine.  Ditto when I disconnect; I hear the descending tones, and that tells me that the drivers have been un-loaded (due to a "disconnected device").

This is totally logical to me.  The problem starts when SP "connects" without loading the drivers; then I get caught in the connect-disconnect loop that only ends when I call up the Task Manager and strangle SharePort.

Do you have a problem with both your desktop and your laptop?
How is your wireless connection?

Are you using the Printer Autoconnect? Or connecting manually?

Have you checked out this post?:

I have to second this, I have had the DIR-825 from its very beginning, and have been through every update of the shareport software, and this last version is the worst ever.
The very firts one worked without problems!!!
The second one was unreliable it would connect 70% of the time
the the third one was a little bit better but still unreliable,
The current 3.0 is totally unreliable, it will connect may be 40% of the time

Now for the specifics. I have it installed on 2 different machines, a desktop with XP pro SP2 32 bits, and a laptop with Windows 7 64 bits.
Installation is fine configuration and initial connection is fine both in permanent connection or auto connection when requesting to print (my most used configuration).
But when like me you print rarely like a couple of times a week, you never know if it will actually be able to connect. Sometimes it work, Often it does not.

When it does not, the way to always solve the problem, is to power cycle the router. Off for 10seconds, then ON, wait until all networks are up again, and then it works fine. When it works I ahve no issue, no connection drop, everything is perfect both in printing mode and in scanning mode for my multifunction printer Canon MP830.

I bought this router for the sole purpose of Shareport, I must say it has been nothing but a Nightmare.

My dir-855 has been like a dream for the past year, with one exception - shareport. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. No apparent reson why it stops working. After a year of printing trouble and hassle with all of my five computers, I finally uninstalled SP and went back to using my wireless print server. Now I can print when I need to.

You shoudl not be installing new drivers everytime a USB device is plugged in. This occur only initially. If it is installing it everytime you plug it in, there was a problem with the programs installation. I woudl suggest unistalling everything with regard to the printer, and reinstalling it, as if you were installing the printer for use with that computer only. (IE plug the printer into the computer in question) Only after you've been able to install the software correctly then would I move to getting shareport to work.
