Can't Connect To Internet Directly After Install
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:10:00 PM »

I just bought the DIR-655 due to the fact that I read it can use multiple Xbox Live accounts at once with open NAT.

I received it in the mail (New, out of the box, if you are wondering) the other day. I put in the install CD and followed the directions. After we go through this tedious CD it finally prompts me to "Finish". I click Finish, and the setup window closes. Install finished? Hardly.

I couldn't access the internet through a wired connection to the main computer... I tried using wireless on the main computer. No dice. I bring my laptop, try wireless... Fail. I wire it to the router, fail again. Always the same error, "Network cable is unplugged".

I got so frustrated with the stupid thing that I just plugged my Linksys back in. I tried again today, and with the same results. I tried the CD again, and it prompts me for the router password (which I configured on the first run through)... Alas, it doesn't respond to the password I chose. So I hard reset the router, set it all up again... Take out the CD, put the CD back in..> Asks me for the password, and it still will not recognize it.

And instead throwing this $100 paper weight against the wall... I plugged my Linksys back in and backed away slowly.

Admittedly, I am not very tech savvy... But I didn't think it would be so difficult to set up a router that comes with an Install CD.... lol

Any help you can give would be be appreciated on my end. I hank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Could it be your provider renews the IP only once an hour?
Mine does. So maybe you have to wait for this renewal to take place.
Or release the IP via the Linksys and disconnect the power before it gets a new ip.

Manual setup via 192.168.1.1.
id and password are in the manual and should enable manual setup.

If this is on a cable modem you need to reboot your modem when connecting a new router as the IP may be different.

Default IP for DIR is  192.168.0.1

Unless user changed it during install to something else

Pretty sure I tried this, but thanks for the suggestion. And I will be sure to do try again when I give this another go.

They may, I couldn't give a definite answer on that. But I have tried this numerous times over a 45-60 minute interval... So I would like to hope it would renew sometime in that time frame. Of course, I may be extremely unlucky.... lol

How do I release the IP from the Linksys?

Yeah, I altered it.... Same password as my current router.... And it just won't respond. I don't get it, personally. I will probably be doing another hard reset before I try again...

Thanks to everyone who has posted thus far. I probably won't try to hook it up again until tomorrow in the early afternoon sometime. I will keep you updated and I appreciate your help.
