Naming the 2.4 and 5GHz bands the same?
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:02:27 PM »

I'll admit I didn't do my homework well enough before I bought my DIR-825 this afternoon, because I thought there would be an option to just broadcast as one network as opposed to two.

In any case, I ended up naming my networks the same. Is there any problem with this? I know right now that I'm connected to the 5GHz band because of the channel I'm on, but I'm just curious if this will cause any problems with connections.

I assume you are talking about setting the Service Set Identifier or SSID on the 2.4 and 5 Ghz band.  I don't believe there is a problem with naming them both the same.   Any computer connecting is still going to the same router and using the same IP scheme that your router is setup for.

You can broadcast just one of the networks. Use Setup:Wireless Settings:Manual Wireless Network Setup. Then uncheck the box "Enable Wireless" for the wireless band you want to disable.

Unless you have a dual band adapter, a 2.4 GHz adapter won't be able to see the 5GHZ transmissions anyway.

Some other routers will let you do this.  One major problem is that you are not sure which wifi network radio you are using, when using a dual-band adapter.

actually, you could set different passwords in the 2.4 and 5 Ghz settings.  That way you would know which one you are connecting to.

Also, once connected, you can look at the router and see who is connected to which radio.

You sure can use the same SSID, however you are better off using different names so you can identify which one is which if you have say a laptop that can revieve either band.

It's your call but you don't need to disable any radio.
