Dead Internet port?? Please help
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:06:45 PM »

I've never had any issues at all with my DGL-4500 since I've bought it. In fact, I was pretty shocked to read about so many issues today while trying to find an answer to my problem.

My issue is, for some odd reason, my router's "Internet" port no longer seems to be functional. No changes have been made and my modem no longer detects the router connected but I can still access the router's configuration pages from any PC. I tried connecting the router to my girlfriend's modem to be sure it's not my modem having the issue and I still came across the same problem... I just updated to the latest firmware in hopes of having it miraculously reactivate the port but that was also a no-go. :'(

I've searched for hours online already and I've finally given in to posting here in a last ditch attempt to hopefully save it rather than forking out another 200 bucks for a router....

Any help or information will be gratefully appreciated.

have you tried a different cable? Have you done a factory reset? Can you plug a cable into the Internet Port and the other end to a PC and check the network connections and see if you see a status. Windows will let you know if you have a connection or not. If you don't see an active connection even after trying a different cable and doing a factory reset, Might have to call DLink support. How long have you had this unit for? What HW version do you have? A1 or A2?

If you're connecting a Cable Modem to the Router, try rebooting the Cable Modem.

Both modems used were DSL modems and power cycled. I tried out multiple cables and reset back to factory defaults before updating to latest firmware version.

I've had the router for about 2-ish years. Not sure how to tell the difference between A1/A2 versions. I'm at work right now, so I wouldn't be able to find out for sure atm.

I haven't tried plugging my PC into the "Internet" port itself though.

Thanks for the replies.

There is a label under the unit and denotes a1 or a2. If you are getting a disconnect when you connect to the PC then I would call up DLink support. This seems like a HW issue.

I would suggest try setting the duplex to Auto. Of it its on auto already, try 100Mbps

From the routers access page:
Advanced> Advanced Network> WAN port speed to Auto or 100Mbs

Also, try hooking up a ethernet port from the WAN to the PC. You might not get a IP, but you should atleast get connectivity. That will test for a bad port. Also, see what the status page says. If the router isn't configured correctly to get a IP from the Modem, or the modem isn't configured correct to give a IP to the router, you can have a problem. Ofcourse, also try a full power cycle. Make sure the modem is 100% online before turning on the router.
