Cannot connect with Vista
« on: June 09, 2010, 07:39:07 AM »

I have five PC's on my home network; two are running XP Pro and three are running Vista Home. The XP computers are able to log into the DNS-323 but I cannot get the Vista PC's to connect. I have tried going to Run, enter the IP address, select the drive, select map drive, enter the username and password that are in the DNS config, select Finish and then receive a message saying the username or password is incorrect. I have tried these usernames and passwords on my XP PC and it works. I tried changing from a public to a private network and that did not help. What am I doing wrong?

Do you see your NAS in the Vista explorer through the top level entry "Network" ?

I can see it. When I select it I can then see the different volumes. When I right click and try to map the drive I get an error that the user name and password are incorrect.

No I cannot. When I click on one of the volumes it asks me to log in. The username is Guest and is greyed out. So I did what I had read somewhere else on this forum and right clicked and tried to map the drive. But it will not accept any username or password. These same usernames and passwords work on any of my XP PC's. Does the DNS-323 work with Vista Home?

It seems to me if the username is "Guest" and greyed out, that's problem number one...
Yes it works with Vista Home.

What are your Vista sharing settings? E.g. Password protected sharing etc etc. Does Vista report you belonging to a public or private network? Do you use a username and password to access your vista machines?

Try this.
Open up "My Computer"
go to "Organize" then select "Folder Options"
go to the "View" tab
and deactive the last option in the list.... something about "easey share" or "sharing wizard"
the "Guest" should no longer be grayed out....

Although I'm using Windows7, my "Sharing Wizard" setting is on and I don't have the guest/greyed out problem.

Vista has more issues in this area than Windows 7, I like the networking in Windows 7, even the Home versions.

your welcome...
I noticed that Win7 Networking is mor "Intelligent" than vista's....
for one, Vista's "Sharing Wizard" is "stupid" if its active. it tries to connect with Guest, and if it does not work, it prompt you for a password, but "Guest" is still set has username and grayed out....

Win7, it tries to connect, and i it fails, it prompt you for a Username And Password...

Yep, at the MVP Summit a few years back when Vista was released, we beat up the networking developers pretty bad on Vista's networking defaults, I think they may have listened. :D
